DE Jack Sawyer (All B1G)

SAWYER LOOKING HEALTHY

We have checked in with five-star Ohio State commit Jack Sawyer a few times over the past several months to see how his recovery has been going after suffering a torn MCL in November. Time and again, Sawyer has told us that he's been on a speedy recovery, that he's been able to go through drills and workouts “better than ever,” and that his rehab has been going incredibly well.

On Thursday night, 270Hoops' Jake Spegal took video of Sawyer – a basketball star in addition to his talents as a defensive end at Pickerington North – giving his teammates some work at an open gym.

Turns out, those assertions by Sawyer that things were going great for him are entirely accurate. He looked fluid and sharp throughout that video. Have to absolutely love the Kevin Garnett and Dirk Nowitzki impressions Sawyer did with a couple of those fadeaway jumpers.

And as Colin Hass-Hill suggests, we might need to see a Jack Sawyer-Dawand Jones pick-and-roll sometime soon.

Just like the Dewand Jones videos, you feel sorry for the normal human kids on the court.

SKULL SESSION: JACK SAWYER EMBRACES EXPECTATIONS, JAYDEN BALLARD IS UNDERRATED, AND DRUE CHRISMAN TOPS A BOTTLE FLIPPING CHALLENGER

HE'S GOT NEXT.
At Ohio State, we've got a time-honored tradition of counting our top-five picks at defensive end before they even sign a letter of intent.

That's an absurd expectation to place on someone before they even attend prom, but it's worked out fine thus far, and Jack Sawyer's got no problem taking it on.

The expectations will be unreasonable. Impossible to fulfill, even. Those who came before Jack Sawyer at Ohio State—players he has dissected and idolized for much of his football life—have created a tradition in which dominance is the standard.

Anything less than that will be seen as subpar, and Sawyer is content with that. He knows what defensive ends have done recently in Columbus. He understands and welcomes anyone calling him the next Chase Young. Or Nick Bosa. Or Joey Bosa.

"I kind of love that people expect that," Sawyer says. "I want those expectations."

...

"It's surreal to think about," he says. "In less than seven months, I'll be enrolled at Ohio State and hopefully on the path that the Bosas have taken and Chase Young has taken and other guys before them. That's kind of just awesome."

To be honest, I feel like the first question Ohio State should ask and prospective player or coach is "how do you feel about unreasonable expectations?" Because that's basically the job description around these parts.

“A lot of guys kind of get upset when when people compare you to someone else, and I get that because everyone wants to be unique in a way, but at the same time you’ve got to understand that being compared to [players like Joey Bosa, Nick Bosa, Chase Young, etc.] is a good thing. I love expectations. I love the comparisons and I can’t wait to put on that kind of performance when I’m at Ohio State. I don’t really look at it like it’s pressure. It’s what I wanted.”

The country’s No. 3-ranked prospect has never shied away from competition. It’s part of the DNA for any kid growing up playing sports in Pickerington, Ohio, a Columbus suburb of roughly 5,000 that has produced six current NFL players. Nathan Hillerich, the head coach for Pickerington North High School said it didn’t take long to figure out that Jack Sawyer was cut from that kind of cloth.

“It’s my first day in the weight room after I was hired,” Hillerich told Lettermen Row this week. “And I brought a tire in, so after that we lifted we did some like, little tire pull challenges. You throw the tire on the ground, blow the whistle and then let the kids go, to see who really wants to keep going. Jack came in, and he was going against Tyler Foster who was a sophomore for us and is now the a starting tight end at Ohio and I matched them up.

“Jack beat him and you know, he’s just going nuts, screaming and yelling, and he was fired up. Ready to go. He wanted to keep going. I was was like ‘Man, this kid is different’ and then I found out that he was only in eighth grade. There’s not a lot of eighth graders that are even working out in the in the high school weight room and who are ready to go compete and expect to win at that level. Jack expects to win every time, no matter what he’s doing. If you talk to Jack, when he goes to Ohio State, he’s going in expecting to start and he expects to be the man, you know? That’s just how he’s wired. He’s going to try to be the best whatever he’s doing.”

Dawand Jones would give him that work!

But in all honesty, Sawyer is on another level in HS, and I’m sure his basketball background is an amazing help with his footwork and agility and moving in space.

I like that he embraces the comparisons, because he’s going to hear his name next to the Bosas and Chase Young(and possibly even Zach Harrison) for his entire Buckeye career. Sawyer easily looks that he can live up to the expectations

“Luckily, all the guys understand and they all support me,” Sawyer said. “They all understand why I was doing it. They said it was a great decision. Even them saying that broke me down even worse. They were supporting me and backing me no matter what.

“It’s definitely one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make, just being such a loyal guy and team-first guy and competitor, it’s really heartbreaking is all it can be described as. I love Coach Hillerich and I love all the guys on the team, so it was a very hard decision to make. But at the end of the day, I think it’s the right decision.”

The No. 1 reason Sawyer made that call is simple – he believes he will have the opportunity to play in games at Ohio State in the winter or spring, when the Big Ten is hopeful it will be able to resume a postponed fall season. When he was speaking with Ryan Day and Larry Johnson, and when he heard of Day’s push to get early enrollees immediate eligibility, that’s when the gears started grinding in Sawyer’s head to possibly make this call.

“To tell you the truth, it was never a thought in my mind that I was gonna do that until I saw the Big Ten and all those guys cancel their seasons and that we could possibly have a season in the spring and have the early enrollees play and not lose a season of eligibility,” Sawyer said. “That went into the decision making a lot, just possibly getting on the field a lot and going into a spring season and making some plays and making some noise. It’s a huge development period that I can gain, and I just wanna go in there and be ready. After all that news came in, that talk just kind of fell on us with me and my family and some of my close coaches and stuff like that.

“I saw a bunch of different things, and then when I saw that early enrollees are gonna get a chance to play this winter-slash-spring season, after that it became almost a no-brainer what the right move was. Especially with all the uncertainty surrounding the high school season and not knowing if you’re gonna get to play – right now, you still don’t know. It could get pushed back or postponed, or you could be getting ready to play a game and it gets delayed or whatnot. After we heard that news and with the uncertainty of high school sports, we decided to make the right decision for the future.”

These guys (i.e. early enrollees) can play and as it now stands won't use up a year of eligibility.....
