DE Darrion Henry-Young (transfer to Kentucky)

#154 in the nation 4 star in ‘20 recruiting class.

Talent like that + Larry Johnson Sr is supposed to = production.

hasn’t been true for 3-4 years now.
I get your point but you also have to look at what is different during that period. Awfully hard to develop somebody in that short of time. My six year old nephew has the ability to stay focused for a longer period of time than some of these players. It seems as if they all expect that the only way to get better is to play in games and anything short of major playing time their first year is a negative.

Plenty of busts in '18 and '19 way before COVID if that's what you mean by what's different.

No I mean that players these days have a SHORT attention span and expect immediate playing time and think that is the only path to being a great player.

Now, I’ve no idea if that is the case with this young man but many these last few years seem to think that way. And we know it due to the immediate eligibility rules of the portal.

Injuries explain three straight classes?

2018:
Taron Vincent has been injured his entire career. Same for Tyreke Smith. Tyler Friday missed the entire season. Tommy Togiai shined. Jackson had a good year this year.

2019: Harrison hasn’t lived up to his expectations. Noah Potter and Jaden McKenzie were long shots to be any more than rotational players. McKenzie has been injured.

2020:
Darrion Henry-Young & Jacolbe Cowan were tweeners that don’t have a position. Ty Hamilton has potential. Just needs consistency.

Outside of Harrison, who still has a year left to put it all together, I’m not sure which of those guys are considered busts considering the circumstances.

It says more about the type and quality of player that has been brought in.

That's 11 guys over 3 entire classes (just on the DL, not giving a pass to the rest of the lack of defensive player development). Many were top 100 type players.

Togiai is the only one who really did anything.

One or two can be a coincidence. 10 of 11 is a trend. It doesn't really matter if he's fallen off in evaluation or in development does it? Net result reared it's head this year and it really shouldn't be ignored.

The top 100 guys were the guys fighting injury, Zach Harrison, and true freshmen. The 2018 class was bit by the injury bug. The 2019 class only had one top 100 defensive player. The 2020 class only had one top 100 defensive player.

The loss of Hafley and the subsequent hire of Kerry Coombs did more to setback the defense than some alleged lack of development or some imagined “Oklahoma mentality.”

There is no "alleged" lack of development. There is a lack of development for three straight classes.

As far as the Oklahoma thing goes, they have willingly only recruited a single top 100 defensive player two years running while stockpiling elite offensive talent. The results on the field show the best offense in the country with a B12 caliber defense. I don't think it's a big stretch to start questioning Day about the Oklahoma thing at all. Add in his vaunted offense not breaking 30 against the defenses he played with a pulse because of an alarming lack of physicality on the OL then I think Oklahoma/B12 is teh perfect comp.

Coombs can't call a defense in game to save his life, that's painfully obvious to us all but I'm not going to fail to call it out when people start to try and make everything that's wrong with the defense one big "oopsie/just bad luck/one bad hire and it's all fixed now" thing and try to give Day, and other coaches, a pass for this.
