Interestingly, one source says he was an NCAA investigator who worked on Tatgate, before becoming disillusioned with the NCAA and switching to the other side.

In that case, encouraged that he used the words ‘small loan’. That can still be a wide range, but rules out some of the ridiculously high figures being thrown around.

Best hope is that the amount was under $1k, from a person not in a position to get a huge windfall from Chase’s professional career, and that it was repaid before all of this became an issue (which Chase has already publicly stated)

Did we discover this internally and address it? If that is true, and it was from a family friend (no agent, no booster), and the money was paid back, I really can't see how this is a big deal.
It’s an Ohio State suspension while they sort it out with/before the NCAA.

no clue how the timing works out with this showing up now, versus say...the offseason. Or last year.

I am assuming this is a one or two game suspension.

Obviously, the downside is that Chase loses a chance to get another 5 sacks against Maryland, and possibly another 8 sacks against Rutgers.

But the silver lining is that it prevents him from getting injured when he is not really needed. And we build depth.

Also, maybe he will take out all his frustration against PSU? That would be fine with me.

Brilliant ploy by Ohio State to self report so we have a reason to sit Chase so he doesn't get hurt playing Maryland.

But as others have said, Ohio State is the absolute worst at handling these situations. Don't self report. Tell the NCAA to fuck off and don't admit anything. The SEC and Clemson have paved the way to making that approach work, use it.

By they way, my opinion, if this is as small as it seems, the NCAA never catches wind of it and OSU’s name and season goes on as usual. They certainly don’t move on it quickly. Just use the “ongoing investigation” line we’ve seen and life goes on. By the time it’s resolved we’d be playing Georgia in 2030.

but Gene likes to feed the machine.

One benefit/hope of the self-reporting, maybe OSU felt this was the right time to bring it up knowing it’ll land in the 1-2 game range. Could be backroom conversations. Lotta ins, lotta outs.

I just want to see Chase play again and end the season with his brothers.
