Caden Curry won not one, not two, but three national defensive player of the week awards for his dominant performance vs. Washington.

The Ohio State defensive end was named Tuesday as the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week, the Chuck Bednarik Player of the Week and the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week after he recorded 11 total tackles with five tackles for loss and three sacks in Ohio State’s 24-6 win over Washington.

Curry shares Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week honors with fellow Ohio State defensive lineman Kayden McDonald, who was likewise dominant against the Huskies with seven tackles, three tackles for loss and two sacks

This is the guy everyone expected when he was recruited. We on the outside don't understand how much work goes into meeting that level of performance at this level. The "Developed Here" mantra is the truth. Our current coaches are killing it, but it takes full buy-in from the players. Tough when you've been a starter your whole life and then you have to sit, play special teams, platoon, keep working and get there. A lot of 5-star guys don't have the mental resilience, especially in the portal-NIL era. Couldn't be happier for this kid.

Ryan Day gets real about Ohio State breakout star who took a rare road in college football to get to this point with the Buckeyes

After losing all of the NFL-level talent that they did from last season’s team, the Ohio State Buckeyes had to have players step up this season. That’s what has to happen if the Buckeyes want to repeat their national championship run and they’re off to a good start in that regard. Returning Jeremiah Smith and Caleb Downs was huge for the Buckeyes but they once again have stars all over this team and others that are trending that way.

The biggest question entering the season was at quarterback and Julian Sayin has checked that box so far with the Buckeyes. Another area of concern was the defensive line where the Buckeyes lost four starters and the returning production was minimal outside of North Carolina transfer Beau Atkinson. Luckily for the Buckeyes, a senior has already shown he’s a breakout player and the sky looks like the ceiling for him this season.

Caden Curry took a road that isn’t often traveled to get to this point with Ohio State

“I mean, Caden is somebody who has played a lot of football here, special teams-wise and has made a lot of plays,” Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said on Tuesday. “Now he’s a key contributor. He’s had his ups and downs along the way, but in this program, between what goes on on the field, what goes on in the weight room, what goes on off the field here, if you hang in there and continue to put one day in front of the other and build resilience up, you’re gonna get maximized.”

Jack Sawyer and J.T. Tuimoloau were the Buckeyes’ starters the last couple of years and they got the job done up front for Larry Johnson. Ohio State has never done a ton of rotating with its defensive line in previous years, so Curry’s usage was limited. Curry played in 13 games as a true freshman in 2022 and recorded a half sack and 14 tackles. As a sophomore, Curry improved to 1.5 sacks. The junior-to-senior season jump is the biggest one yet and Curry is now a starter for Ohio State’s defense.

Curry showed up big in the first Big Ten game of the season and it was on the road. Ohio State has needed a force to step up on the defensive line and show they’re going to be that double-digit sack guy. Going into the season, Kenyatta Jackson was predicted by most to be that guy. Curry’s patience and decision not to transfer out has paid off this season and it wouldn’t shock anyone if he ends up with 12+ sacks at this point.

Just sayin': There is a premium in the NFL draft on franchise QBs, left OTs, and pass rushing DEs. Performances like the Washington game will move him up significantly on the draft board.

Ohio State’s Arvell Reese, Jeremiah Smith and Caleb Downs Named AP Midseason First-Team All-Americans

By Andy Anders on October 16, 2025 at 11:24 am @andyanders55

Five Buckeyes have earned high honors from the Associated Press at the midway point of the college football season.
Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese, safety Caleb Downs and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith were all named first-team AP midseason All-Americans on Thursday. Defensive linemen Caden Curry and Kayden McDonald took home second-team honors.
Reese has emerged as perhaps the best linebacker in college football through six games, and his recognition as a midseason first-teamer is further proof of that. He leads the Buckeyes in tackles with 38 and is second in sacks with 4.5, playing in a variety of spots on the field, including traditional off-ball linebacker, on the edge as a rusher and in the B-gap on the line of scrimmage.
Downs was a unanimous All-American in 2024, and his momentum hasn't slowed in 2025. The engine of Ohio State's defense, Downs has 28 tackles and an interception.
Smith continues to be the best receiver in college football, even if his stats have just been great and not nation-leading in 2025. He's been a major decoy for the Ohio State offense even when he's not getting the ball, freeing up other weapons for big plays. He has 40 receptions for 505 yards and seven touchdowns.

Caden Curry and Kayden McDonald have emerged as the anchors of the Ohio State defensive line at defensive end and defensive tackle, respectively. Curry has a team-high six sacks with 31 total tackles and 9.5 tackles for loss, while McDonald has racked up incredible production for a nose guard with 26 tackles, six TFLs and three sacks.
Ohio State’s five total selections are the most of any school. The Buckeyes tied Texas A&M for the most first-team selections.

It’s been great seeing Caden’s production.

Not pouring water on his stats, but he’s really taking advantage of the job he’s being given and the special play of others around him.

It’d be unfair not to point out the sacrifice, say someone like Kenyatta Jackson makes (in containing an end and acting as a de facto spy) while Caden gets the green light to crash from the end.

Caden has finished the job multiple times this year while the scheme has forced the QB to hold the ball too long or the pocket has collapsed into him.

I’m seeing some stats comparing him to the Bosa’s or Chase Young and it’s just not apples to apples IMO. Those guys wrecked OT’s and were so explosive off the ball. Caden is having a great year, but I’d also give the scheme and players around him (Kenyatta, Arvell, Sonny, Macdonald, etc) a lot of credit.
