DC Matt Patricia (Official Thread)

This type of creative scheming is why Patricia was hired

I’d heard one of the OSU media folks (can’t remember who because I listen to them all) state this is something Knowles would never do or attempt. That this like you mentioned was why Patricia was hired which is to take this defense to the next level.

I’m rooting for Patricia… had a tough go in Detroit. Got fired and took that time to get himself right physically and mentally.

Really hoping he crushes it here and can springboard that to another HC position because I don’t think he’ll attempt the Bill Belichick clone again. That seemed out of his personality having now listened to him for the past 7 months. He’s a very fun and outgoing coach it seems like and from what I can tell his players love him here.

I wonder if he secretly has a thought about not being on that Top 10 DC's in college football list. A lot of time in Boston, then Detroit...I'm betting he has some "red ass" in him when he wants to let it out. I"m for it! Especially unleash on the CUNts

If you think about it in the NFL the difference in players between the best defense and the worst defense is pretty small. Most teams probably have a handful of elite players, but the best defenses are the best due to X's and O's rather than Jimmy's and Joe's. At TOSU, you can have both most of the time, but when the playoffs roll around and there is more parity, the X's and O's are going to be more important.

Keep reading that the D presented Texas different upfront looks. OK, delving a bit deeper, does this go against LJsr's 4 down linemen religion? Seems so, so wonder what's going on here. Dictate down? Getting into the weeds with the DL? Certainly a pro look, disguising the front....will have to look at the tape (replay) to watch. Heck, didn't even get to catch the substitutions, was wanting to see Sanchez's debut, along with Faheem Delane (not sure he got in), etc. Anyway, glad Patricia didn't totally revamp the D, but tweaked it a tad, and appears to have made it better. PS, to me, he gets a medal for having Igbinosun to having ZERO penalties. With only two all day (and Texas tackle Baker - a one-time tOSU target), having two movement penalties, it was a very impressive performance. Also bet my wife, Sayin would have one INT, trying to force a ball to Jeremiah. Guess was wrong about that one.

Not necessarily, there are multiple fronts you can play in even.

More predictable fronts are easier to deal with from the OL perspective in the running game. They're also much eaiser to deal with as a playcaller.

The defensive front reminded me of combinations of Knowles along with Heacock. Then toss in some slants and overloads I hadn't previously seen before.

I know Patricia coached a lot of cover 2 systems in his early days of taking over for the Pats. To no surprise I see Sark giving Patricia credit and mentioning the variations and DB rotations post snap in C2 being a problem for them.

That’s so true, and a reason why I was so baffled that so many OSU fans were against this hire. He’s not the HC, but the DC and he’s coached some of the best defenses at the highest level, and learned from arguably the GOAT NFL coach. He won’t see one QB or even offense in college that will be more complex than anything he’s seen before. If oSU were to lose a game, I can see it being due to offensive players just making plays and being better in general. But scheme wise, I just don’t see many being able to fool him in a schematic way and Sark is at the top of the heap.

i don’t see Patricia being a guy who is getting burned by an offense and then refusing to change.
