I hope this message will not offend anyone, but I am absolutely amazed at the negative things people are posting about the Ohio State defense under Knowles. We lost The Game and it is coloring evaluations of every aspect of the team unfairly. Moreover, the effects of these negative posts are corrosive and negativity is cycling out of control.
You want to get rid of Knowles? Fine. Show us the replacement who you believe will turn the ship around from the imagined rocks into which it is heading. Let us all review this year's objective statistical performance by the suggested replacement and discuss that before we trash Knowles.
Before you begin, try to go "all in ESPiN". Does the Buckeye defense pass the eyeball test? For me, that stops with the question, "When in the hell is the last time we saw a Silver Bullets defense make critical goal line stands like this?" Even in the game, TCUN got only one TD, which was gifted to them by the offense on the 5 yard line. Two scores from 5 yards offense. What about the Penn State game? ...and Indiana?
Next, we could go all "fact-based", you know, look for verifiable results.
Look at the OBJECTIVE information on the NCAA (link here). Knowles defense is #1 in total defense, #1 red zone defense, #1 first down defense, #2 passing yards allowed, etc. Browse the various other statistics. The Buckeye defense is usually at least top 5 or 6 even after the TSUN game.
We could even look for a more rigorous objective multidimensional evaluation. Look at the more respected computer models that provide defensive rankings (e.g., Massey and Dokter Entropy have them #1 for defense).
The only conclusion that I can draw is that few, if any, college football defensive teams are better than Ohio State. Moreover, when measured by objective holistic performance on the field, Jim Knowles has taken a defense that was sinking and perhaps on its way to a low tide for decades, and turned it into arguably the best in college football by objective and subjective measures. And he did that knowing that every team he was coaching against considered the Ohio State game to be their most important game of the year.
BuckeyePlanet was founded by people that placed a value on meaningful discussions based in objective evaluation. For decades, it has been a place where knowledgeable football fans (and hacks like me) could come to discuss football...not yell at clouds. Please can we get back to that in this thread.
