My take? Yeah, would have been nice. Woulda been nice if Woody had started Macejowski at Ann Arbor instead of Kern in 1969, knowing that Kern was dealing with back spasms and only about 75%. Woulda been nice if Tressell had gone straight to Troy instead of Zwick. Woulda been nice if Meyer had dropped Smith back at Florida. Woulda been nice if Day had not left Coombs in charge of the defense.
Coaches often let loyalty get in the way of their better judgment and I get that. In Day's case, I'll also consider that he was just beginning to take the reins, a promotion based on his success as an offensive coach. Add to that, the success Coombs had as a defensive backs coach and as a recruiter. I don't think most coaches would have done any better.
