I suppose because at this point, it's just a data point to consider when he takes future actions, right? Maybe it took him too long.. maybe that's because as gifted a coach as he is, he is learning on the job. I'm willing to give some slack on his decision to stick with Coombs for a period of time, given the circumstances. I will also say, I think OSU may have been teetering on falling towards a Rich Rod scUM type team, where defense was completely optional, though. The recruiting differences between O and D is noticeable. But, with the personnel moves he has ultimately made, particularly Knowles, I'm going to wait and see how 2022 gets started.

I don't know how much we will see at the spring game, but I'll certainly be looking for schematic improvement even if it's just practice.

Because it's in the past and he's taken drastic steps to fix it. Can't change the past and I think we've already covered the failures of the 2021 D. What else is there to talk about?

“It's been great. I mean, Coach Day is really level-headed, first-class quality program,” Knowles said in May. “Everything we do is just first class, everything we do is the best in the business and he's a football guy. So he enjoys talking football. We can bounce concepts off each other and that's fun. Because that's why we're (coaches). One of the things we love as coaches is to talk football. Coach Day is great at that.

“He just runs just a highly disciplined, high-functioning organization. It's efficient, there's efficiency in everything we do. He's strong on relationships with the players. So I think that's always in the forefront. That's the way it should be. In college, that's what we're here to do is develop young men, but I've been impressed with everything that he's done and put in place.”

Was just thinking that I think (not know) we found a really excellent DC. If Day would have looked after the 2020 season, I am not sure we would have Knowles, and instead have a good DC who would he be out the door in a few years to something bigger.

Things happen for a reason. The 2020 season was a very strange one. Should have things changed, probably, but nobody at that time could say 100% it had too.

I think Day pulled the trigger when he had to, and I think the whole team is so much better as a whole now.

My take? Yeah, would have been nice. Woulda been nice if Woody had started Macejowski at Ann Arbor instead of Kern in 1969, knowing that Kern was dealing with back spasms and only about 75%. Woulda been nice if Tressell had gone straight to Troy instead of Zwick. Woulda been nice if Meyer had dropped Smith back at Florida. Woulda been nice if Day had not left Coombs in charge of the defense.

Coaches often let loyalty get in the way of their better judgment and I get that. In Day's case, I'll also consider that he was just beginning to take the reins, a promotion based on his success as an offensive coach. Add to that, the success Coombs had as a defensive backs coach and as a recruiter. I don't think most coaches would have done any better.

Ryan Day has also never been a head coach before his time at Ohio State. There's learning curves, even for the best. The last full time head coach Ohio State hired with no head coaching experience was Paul Bixler in 1946.

I agree with you 100%. Improvement of the defense to the top 25 range is the long pole in the tent. Presuming we solve our run blocking, zero concerns about putting up mid 30’s to 40’s on any defense we face. I am optimistic but our last game was a pretty lousy performance aided by Utah’s QB getting knocked out of the game. If we can be gap sound and the young studs on the DL take the step forward we all expect it should be a fun season! So excited to see it all come together…
