DB Rocco Pentello (official thread - transfer to Ashland; transfer to Otterbein)

Congrats to Rocco...

I love the kids that want nothing more than to be buckeyes and when they get the offer they committ on the spot...

The only question I have is why the staff has been asking some of these other guys to keep things silent, but didnt mind Rocco coming out right away...

I dont think the staff asked anyone to stay silent....I think the silents are the guys who want to take other visits, announce at the AA game, etc

I had just heard rumblings that the decisions were mutual to stay that way, maybe that was more for 08' guys...

Back to Rocco and congratulating him on his great accomplishment...

This is the kind of kid no one gets excited about, but in a few years is getting taken on draft day. From everything I have read on him he has a great work ethic and that is something that is hard to teach. Congrats to him and I hope he has a great four years.

I tell you what, you absolutely have to love the name this kid carries with him. Either as a steady player on O or if he is platooned as a safety the instant nickname of "The Rock" could be his to earn on the field.

Welcome aboard Rocco, now go be a Rock as a Buckeye!

now it's official. we need to get something like the bat signal for jlb so he knows there has been a verbal and can post the official dancing bananas.

welcome to the family Rocco!

Why is almost everyone counting Rocco out at QB? From the video I watched on SunshinePreps, granted all I've seen of him, he looks like a fine QB prospect to me. He reminds me alot of Troy Smith when he is running the ball, same type of moves and speed, and alot like Phillip Rivers throwing. His release seems short but effortless. On some of his throws it looks like hes just shoveling it but it goes 15-20 yards on a tight spiral. His running is exactly what we want around here. We don't want someone like Pat White. We want a QB who makes smart decisions, is accurate, and leads by example. I see no reason why Rocco shouldn't come in and state his case right off the bat!

Welcome to the family Rocco.

OHIO STATE NOTEBOOK

Pentello commits

Rocco Pentello didn?t hesitate when Ohio State offered him a scholarship this weekend on his official visit.
"I jumped on it," Pentello said.
The son of Westerville South coach Rocky Pentello, Rocco was a standout quarterback ? before suffering a season-ending broken ankle halfway through this season ? but was recruited by OSU to play safety. At 6 feet, 195 pounds with 4.4-second speed in the 40, he turned heads at the OSU summer camp in June and had been on the Buckeyes? radar since.
"I grew up around Ohio State, and now to think I?m going to be a part of it, it?s awesome," Pentello said. "It?s like a dream come true."
He became the 10 th commitment to a class that?s expected to number 18 or 19 on national letter of intent signing day in February. The only other noncommitted visitor during the weekend, defensive end Ben Martin of Cincinnati LaSalle, did not announce a decision. He also is considering Notre Dame, Tennessee and Florida, among others.

Okay, I have a question for anyone to throw their opinion at...but why did Ohio State offer Rocco NOW? He hasn't played in a couple of months, so he hasn't shown them something recently...he wowed them way back at summer camp...and on top of that, Rocco has shown himself to be someone to "keep an eye on" since he was a freshman in high school! I'm sure he's happy to get the offer, but the timing just seems funny. He showed throughout his HS career that he was a player, then put up the time at summer camp, but now he gets an offer after sitting out with an injury?

My honest opinion is that the staff must know they are not getting some players that they wanted. And that is not to bash Mr. Pentello, either. I figured he'd be a Buckeye when I first heard about him.

This has nothing to do with any other recruits on the board, both IMO and from talking to people that seem to know what is going on behind the scenes. The fact of the matter is he is a 6-0 195 lb. DB who runs in the 4.45 range and has some serious athletic talent. I would compare him to Grant Schwartz or Tyler Everett coming out of high school. The fact is that he has a chance to be a part of the program which he grew up dreaming about being a part of and has the physcial talent to warrant and offer based on the staff's judgement. People who complain about this offer are the same ones who complained about Troy getting his offer in 2002, Kirk Barton in 2003, Curtis Terry in 2004, Brian Robiskie in 2005 or Aaron Gant last year...ALL of whom are guys that have contributed this year. Trust the staff. We are still in great shape with a ton of defensive prospects...Still, Barksdale, Martin, Brent, Thomas and Jeremiah on the defensive line and Wright, Allen, Scott, Berry, Warren and Johnson in the defensive backfield. Will we land them all...of course not. Do we have a legit shot at all of them...definitely. And for those that are worried about OSU bringing in so many "safetys" in this class, keep in mind there is a possibility that Oliver moves down to OLB and either Torrence or Clifford goes to WR.

Having said all of that, I would be shocked to see Rocco at QB at OSU. He is very versatile and could end up being a Gonzalez type WR or an Anderson Russel type safety. There is always the possibility that he puts on serious weight his first couple of years in the program and moves down to OLB in the mold of a Tyler Moeller.
