DB Malcolm Jenkins (All B1G, All-American, Thorpe Award, All-Pro, 2x Super Bowl Champion)

Jenkins starts: Cornerback Malcolm Jenkins, the Saints' first-round pick from Ohio State, made the first start of his career and came up with the first interception of his career.

He made a diving grab of a pass from Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman with 5:41 remaining in the second quarter. The pass was intended for receiver Antonio Bryant.

"We were just in one of our normal coverages and I just broke on the ball," said Jenkins, who started in place of injured Tracy Porter. "He threw it, I don't think the receiver followed through on his route too much, and I kind of just laid out for it and was able to get it."

The Saints were able to convert Jenkins' interception into a John Carney field goal and a 10-7 lead.

Jenkins finished with a team-high seven tackles and two passes defended.

Rookie Jenkins making most of chances

METAIRIE ? Even as a first-round draft pick, the 14th player selected in the NFL draft this spring, New Orleans Saints cornerback Malcolm Jenkins knew there would be some ups and downs in making the transition to the pro ranks.

Sure enough, there have been valleys ? among them a 1?-week holdout at the start of training camp and a left ankle injury that forced him to miss two games in a three-week stretch once the regular season began.

But the peaks have certainly equaled things out.

Jenkins made a big play on special teams in each of the first three games and the last two weeks has stood out on defense in a variety of ways, helping the Saints remain undefeated going into a huge Monday night showdown with the New England Patriots in the Superdome.

With the rash of injuries that has hit the cornerback position lately, Jenkins, the 2008 Jim Thorpe Award winner as the nation?s top defensive back will probably get many more opportunities to build on what he?s done lately.

Jenkins broke up two passes in a 28-23 win against the St. Louis Rams on Nov. 15, including one on the Rams? final drive, then made his first NFL start a memorable one Sunday with eight total tackles and his first interception in a 38-7 rout of the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Jenkins was thrown into the fire because the Saints had four cornerbacks ? Jabari Greer, Tracy Porter, Randall Gay and Leigh Torrence ? go down with injuries in the last three games.

But to Jenkins, being asked to do more wasn?t any different than doing the things that made him an All-American at Ohio State ? especially in his first start against the Bucs.

?I just had to relax and play,? the soft-spoken Jenkins said. ?I?ve been a starter before. I started my freshman year in college. Back then, I wasn?t really nervous. So I tried to do the same thing here ? I just had to have confidence in myself.?

Held Welker to 6 grabs for 32 yards. He was matched on him most of the game. Got away with a pretty bad hold, which possibly could have resulted in a TD, but overall he's done well for a rookie going against the premiere slot receiver in the game. Got flagged for a couple 5 yard holding penalties, but that isn't a big deal

you could read Payton's lips at one point talking about two penalties... but, thats a rook against, according to the MNF commentators, one of the best tandems of all time... I mean, overall perfectly solid performance. His hits look like they did in college. Makes me real happy in that way. Real happy.

Rookie redux: The Saints' first-round draft pick in 2009, Ohio State cornerback Malcolm Jenkins, made his second start and once again looked strong. Jenkins led the team in tackles and had an interception in his first start last week at Tampa Bay, and Monday night he was second on the team in tackles with eight and broke up a pass to Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker that might have gone for a touchdown.

Jenkins had already delivered several big plays this year on special teams, but he was pressed into starting duties when a raft of injuries depleted the Saints' secondary.

Jenkins was largely responsible for limiting Wes Welker, the Patriots' leading receiver, to 32 yards.

"It was a little slower tonight than last week, " Jenkins said. "I'm having a lot of fun out there."

Jenkins was often joined in the secondary by cornerbacks Mike McKenzie and Chris McAlister, two guys who had essentially retired from football before being signed recently by the Saints.

"We all had confidence in ourselves, " Jenkins said. "We practice hard, we prepare hard, and we came out with a good game plan that said, 'make them beat us, make them earn it.'
