METAIRIE ? Even as a first-round draft pick, the 14th player selected in the NFL draft this spring, New Orleans Saints cornerback Malcolm Jenkins knew there would be some ups and downs in making the transition to the pro ranks.
Sure enough, there have been valleys ? among them a 1?-week holdout at the start of training camp and a left ankle injury that forced him to miss two games in a three-week stretch once the regular season began.
But the peaks have certainly equaled things out.
Jenkins made a big play on special teams in each of the first three games and the last two weeks has stood out on defense in a variety of ways, helping the Saints remain undefeated going into a huge Monday night showdown with the New England Patriots in the Superdome.
With the rash of injuries that has hit the cornerback position lately, Jenkins, the 2008 Jim Thorpe Award winner as the nation?s top defensive back will probably get many more opportunities to build on what he?s done lately.
Jenkins broke up two passes in a 28-23 win against the St. Louis Rams on Nov. 15, including one on the Rams? final drive, then made his first NFL start a memorable one Sunday with eight total tackles and his first interception in a 38-7 rout of the Tampa Bay Bucs.
Jenkins was thrown into the fire because the Saints had four cornerbacks ? Jabari Greer, Tracy Porter, Randall Gay and Leigh Torrence ? go down with injuries in the last three games.
But to Jenkins, being asked to do more wasn?t any different than doing the things that made him an All-American at Ohio State ? especially in his first start against the Bucs.
?I just had to relax and play,? the soft-spoken Jenkins said. ?I?ve been a starter before. I started my freshman year in college. Back then, I wasn?t really nervous. So I tried to do the same thing here ? I just had to have confidence in myself.?
