INDIANAPOLIS -- More than a few mock drafts have paired Ohio State cornerback Malcolm Jenkins and the Green Bay Packers, who are set to choose No. 9 overall. (Among the mock drafters are ESPN.com analyst Todd McShay.)

Will Jenkins end up with the Packers? No one knows at this point. The Packers will need weeks to filter through the information they gleaned at the scouting combine, and frankly there is some question about whether Jenkins projects as a cornerback or a safety.

Jenkins spent a good part of his media session Sunday downplaying suggestions that he his better suited for safety. If they can't project him as a cornerback, it's unlikely the Packers will select him at No. 9; rare is the safety who is deemed worth of a top 10-pick.

Jenkins refused to say exactly how tall he is -- "6-foot-something," he said -- and makes the argument he is a cornerback in safety's body. So, let's get on with it:

Are you aware of the cornerback-safety debate?

Malcolm Jenkins: Yeah, I've heard all the [speculation] about how I'm going to run, if I run slow then I'm going to be a safety and all of that. I'm not really worried about it. It's all about how I'm going to run and I'm real confident in how I'm going to do with that.

So there is pressure on your 40 time?

MJ: No. They're expecting me to run 4.5 and I'm pretty confident I can run faster than that. So I'm not really pressured.

If you were asked, how would you sell yourself as a corner?

MJ: If you turn on the film that's what you see. I do what every other corner [does]. If you put on a film of a guy that's 5-10, 185, I'm doing the same things that they're doing [but] at my size. In the league you've got receivers that are bigger and more physical, and that's what you need, a guy that can do it all. With my size and speed, it's something rare that you don't find a lot around the nation.

Jenkins trying to make case he's better at CB

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Malcolm Jenkins hears the questions constantly.

Maybe, the doubters suggest, he's not quick enough to play cornerback in the NFL. Maybe, at his listed size of 6 feet 1, 201 pounds, he'd be a better safety. Maybe he should have skipped that senior season and put those debates to rest.

Jenkins believes he can answer any question scouts have for him at the NFL's annual scouting combine. If they want more proof, Jenkins suggests they review his game tapes — or pay attention to what he says.

"If you put on a film of a guy who's about 5-10, 185, I'm doing the same things they're doing at my size," he said. "In the league now, you've got receivers that are getting bigger and more physical and that's what you need — a guy that can do it all. With my size and speed, it's something rare you really don't find around the nation."

Perhaps not.

Clearly, though, this week is crucial to Jenkins' future hopes.

Those who wonder whether he's fast enough to cover the NFL's speedy receivers will get a rare first-hand chance to clock one of the draft's top prospects. Jenkins plans to buck the trend of skipping drills altogether in Indy and run for scouts on what one team president describes as a fast track.

Why? Jenkins has nothing to hide.

Jenkins believes a good time would alleviate some of the growing concerns, while the rounds of interviews with team officials could resolve any lingering doubts.

If all goes well, Jenkins could go in the first five to 10 picks in April.

But Jenkins, who decided to stay at Ohio State for his senior season, seems to be caught in that annual tradition of getting every minute detail picked apart.

And he knows it.

"If you watch my film, I might not look as fast as some other guys," he said. "But wherever this (talk of moving to safety) came from, it's definitely snowballed. I have no control over where it comes from."

At Malcolm's size and rare tackling ability, I would have expected more than 15. I doubt it makes a huge difference in draft stock, seeing as anyone can grab a tape and see how physical he is.

That GM who claims this is a fast track must not be paying attention to the times this year....seeing as how slow these numbers are compared to last year, I just cannot buy this is a "fast" track. Several receivers put up good times, but in total, thi syear has not come close to 2008 or 2007 combine numbers.

The draft stock of Ohio State cornerback Malcolm Jenkins took a hit today when he ran, unofficially at this point, between a 4.53 and 4.58 at the NFL Combine. Sports Illustrated draft analyst Tony Pauline, who is still at the combine, said he believes Jenkins has dropped out of the top 10 of the draft with the times, unless he shows something much different at Ohio State's pro day on March 13.

Ohio State is known for having a fast track that produces much lower 40 times.

But Pauline, as others have suggested, believes NFL teams now will really look at Jenkins as a safety more than as a corner. And if he's not seen as a lockdown corner, he's not as valuable as a very high pick.

Pauline also reiterated how stiff Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis looked during his workouts on Monday, his athleticism not standing up to many of the other prospects at his position.

Brandon Hughes ran 4.36

I was pretty sure Vontae ran 4.43 ... but I'll 2x check that. EDIT: Ya, 4.43 according to NFL Network

Macho Harris was in the upper 4.5's as well.

Are you kidding me? How is no one else noticing that everyone across the board is running slower than expected?

Seriously, you can take .05-.1 off of everyone of these 40 times.
