Former Mansfield Senior football star eyes primary role in OSU secondary

MANSFIELD -- Ohio State safety Jamario O'Neal didn't have time to talk, but that brief phone conversation with his son revealed plenty to Mansfield resident Walter Jefferson.
"He said he'd have to call me back because he was watching film ... I'm elated with that," Jefferson said.
"That's a sign of maturity. When you reach a certain age, and you know you have to put out your best to maintain your job, there's nothing else to do but do it. He's doing what he needs to do ... film work is part of the job."
A sprained ankle cost O'Neal a chance to play in the spring game, but he doesn't consider the injury a setback even though Coleman may have gained ground in his quest for playing time by picking off two passes in one of the jersey scrimmages. Coleman is also a nickel back candidate.
"I feel I had a good spring ... a mistake-free deal," said O'Neal, who has played in all 25 games since his arrival in Columbus. "I didn't have too many interceptions, but there weren't that many balls thrown my way."
Right now, we're just trying to get him healthy," Reynolds said. "He's put on more muscle weight and we want him to get used to it without losing his running form. You don't want to get stronger without staying fluid. Most guys, like Jamario, you can tell they have track backgrounds. But with him, it's almost like we're starting over.
"We want him to get back to where he's opening up his stride."

O'Neal gets look as kick returner

COLUMBUS -- A 50-yard return by Mansfield native Jamario O'Neal in last week's kick scrimmage may result in extra playing time for Ohio State's junior safety.
The Buckeyes have tried different personnel combinations during the preseason to replace record-setting return man Ted Ginn Jr. O'Neal, a former Mansfield Senior track star, is getting a long look.
"Jamario is a good one back there," coach Jim Tressel said, "but when you graduate Teddy and Gonzo (Anthony Gonzalez), you're in the auditioning stage for a lot of things."
