DB Eugene Clifford (official thread)

If mentors like H&G just sit back and watch kids throw away potential, we are all in trouble. When young adults choose the wrong path, someone needs to be there to get them back on the right track.
I agree with you 100% here.. I should clarify

the only thing i didn't agree with in H&Gs post was that he has too much potential from God to throw his life away. And looking at the way H&G was standing on his podium preaching down to Clifford didnt sit well with me (or rather how i percieved the speech to be). If he chooses to fuck up and never see the field, it most certainly is his choice.. and shouldn;t be repremanded because 'God has blessed you'.. my point was if he wants to fuck up he's free to do so.. idk something about the way it was said didn't sit well with me. but like i said, i should clarify because i agree with the message and what H&G is doing by mentoring and helping out.. we do need more of those people around kids.

I understand, but I also know how deep that cut runs when you watch one with so much potential doing something so baffling. When you are that close to a kid, you can say and do things that most people could never understand. However, I can respect your point here.

Good luck Cliff, very valuable lesson learned early in life. I see Bleed S&G point here, H&G I am not sure how you know Cliff, but I know you know him very well, but is a lecture on a public forum the best avenue to send that message?

The message was spot on and I respect what you are saying, just seems odd to be placed on a message board

Gene,

You not only disappointed the people you will never meet, yet cheer you every day, but you also disappointed those closest to you; your family and the Colerain community. Your parents will forgive you and the Colerain community and Buckeye Nation will forgive you or give you the benfit of the doubt...But a lesson must be learned by you, young man. Right, wrong or indifferent, you represent more than just your family and yourself. You represent a proud community, a proud state and an even prouder fan base. Whether you like it or not, Gene, you represent Colerain and The Ohio State University and your actions going forward will ALWAYS have one, the other or BOTH in front of or behind your name. "Today, Colerain football player and Ohio State recruit Eugene Clifford..."
If you want to blow blunt for the rest of your life, Gene, walk away from OSU and hide...Colerain and OSU will re-load and in ten years people will ask "whatever happened to Eugene Clifford??" and somebody will say, "he didn't care about school or football. All he wanted to do was hang with his friends, get high and stay in trouble". I pray that is not the way you wish to be remembered.

I can't wait to see you in a couple of days to tell you this in person. It may be your life, Gene, but life is not yours to throw away when God has blessed you with so much.
Great Post. Kids need to hear this kind of stuff from their parents, a mentor or someone. I hope he realizes the magnitude of his mistake and uses it as a turning point in his life. Turn things around Mr. Clifford you can do it. Buckeye Nation is behind you.

There are several reason why its on the message board.

1) when I found out today I was pissed and I let my anger out.
2) I believe in smaking your own. Millani commented on this earlier to an extent. We can't just sit back and make fun of other players from other programs when they mess up and then pretend like nothing happened when it happens to one of our own.
3) Kerry Coombs built something special at Colerain...and the kids have been hit from all sides by GCL school fans for being 'thugs'...right or wrong, they are under a microscope and they must not be ordinary....they must be extraordinary young men in the community. And it hurts when you see one of them screw up....then the whole gets labeled and the 'thug' comments continue.
4) I don't know Eugene as well as I know Tyler or Connor...if Tyler and Connor had done something like this I would have proabaly called Tyler and bashed him and I would have done the same to Connor...I don't know when I will see Gene next, but I know a lot of people connected to Gene will see that post and I hope Gene sees it to...when I got busted at the age of 15 for petty theft the worst punishment I had to deal with was listening to my old man...an old school guy if there ever was one....tell me how disappointed he was and how I had hurt my mother and family.... I'd have given my left nut to have just taken an ass beating than to hear my dad say I disappointed him...funny thing? never stole again.

It was just a natural reaction on my part to post it.

I apologize if it offended anybody...but I certainly don't apologize for posting it or feeling the way I do about what Gene did/does. I'll never apologize for caring and wanting to see talent used, not wasted.

Seeing this report and his father's comments, kind of reminds me of what happened with Fuss-Cheatham before he came to tOSU. Didn't help Fuss's shooting percentage, but he seemed to learn from it. I'm sure the coaching staff is on top of it.

Stupid for me to even call this, yet you still defended yourself and didn't need to, very classy H&G. It is obvious you care for this kid and want what is best. I thought you were closer to him and would deliver this message in person to him and not here.

Per this morning's Dispatch -

It is a minor misdemeanor and he paid a $105 fine.

He was not a student at OSU at the time so this is not governed by any OSU policy.

However, this does serve as a warning sign that could lead to more strict drug monitoring while he is a student at OSU.

Go on about your business - nothing to see here.

Your post should not have offended anyone as it was spot on. Not only to Gene, but any other person who had the pleasure of reading it.

Your dad did well with you. Hearing from your father how you disappointed him, well, that is by far one of the worst punishments one can receive. It had the desired affect on you as you never stole again. It also let you know at a relatively young age, that when you disappoint someone who cares about you, and they let you know it disappointed him/her, that hearing those words can be extremely powerful.

Continue to mentor these young men. When they slip up, let these young men that you care about, and they know that you care about them, know how disappointed you are. Hopefully, they will have the same reaction you did when you were 15. Ideally, they will remember this in the future and maybe they can pass it on to the next generation.

...And in further news, he's going to be doing gassers before he ever officially sets foot on campus...

...and will probably continue to do so until the grass turns purple and tells him to go ruffle Tressel's hair.
