Bills release Thomas; fail to make offers to Leonhard, Williams
Posted: February 28, 2008

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) -- Kiwaukee Thomas' contract was terminated by the Buffalo Bills on Thursday, further depleting the team of experienced cornerbacks on the eve of free agency.

Safety Jim Leonhard and reserve running back Shaud Williams will become free agents on Friday after the Bills elected not to issue qualifying offers to retain their rights.

The Bills did retain the rights to defensive tackle Jason Jefferson by making him a qualifying offer. And they re-signed four players: tight end Tim Massaquoi, safety Dustin Fox, receiver Scott Mayle and defensive tackle Corey Mace.

The cut leaves Buffalo with a big shortage at cornerback. Only Ashton Youboty, Terrence McGee, Jabari Greer and Dustin Fox remain. This ensures Buffalo will be drafting and signing at the very least one corner.

Exclusive free agents signed

A pair of practice squad players are also now under contract as cornerback Dustin Fox and wide receiver Scott Mayle signed their exclusive rights tenders.

Once tendered by Buffalo earlier this offseason the rights of both Fox and Mayle were exclusively tied to the Bills. Signing their tenders was simply a formality.

Fox and Mayle both served on Buffalo's practice squad last season. Fox was called up to the active roster on Nov. 23 last year and appeared in five games for the Bills.

Both Fox and Mayle were in attendance for the start of Buffalo's offseason conditioning program.

HEY ROOMIE

Bills defensive back Dustin Fox is relaxing during the summer in his Plain Township home before returning to Buffalo for training camp. The GlenOak graduate took in an Indians game last week with complimentary tickets from Tribe second baseman Josh Barfield. The two are former roommates.

Fox roomed with Bills teammate Ashton Youboty and Barfield in Buffalo while Barfield was playing Triple A ball with the Bisons. Barfield and Youboty were high-school classmates and through the apartment arrangement, Fox became friends with Barfield.

McGee, Greer, James and McKelvin go into training camp as the top four corners. James got most of the snaps as the nickel back in the spring and is the favorite to secure that role because the Bills want an experienced guy covering slot receivers. Another player to watch is Ashton Youboty, who might need a great training camp to make the team. Rookies Reggie Corner and Kennard Cox had their moments this spring and will put plenty of heat on Youboty. Dustin Fox, a practice squad player most of last season, looks like the odd man out.

Damn. Ashton goes from high draft to making the team?

That sucks because he had the tools while here. I wish we would have had him for just one more year. I dont know what the problem is with him in Buffalo?

Anyways, awesome news for Dustin. I don't care what the critics say, the boy has talent, just needs the right team. Hopefully the Vikings show a better home for Doss.

Just meant that through all the cuts and try-outs, Fox was still able to make the team - practice squad or not. He's still on the team, waiting for the next DB to get injured and him to step up. He's only but a few plays away from seeing better and more important time. You can never count out injuries, they are bound to happen sometime.

FOX IN A BATTLE

Dustin Fox is in a battle to make Buffalo's 53-man roster despite the impression he made as a special-teams player last year. Buffalo drafted heavily at defensive back (including McKinley graduate Reggie Corner), and Fox is making an impression.

He's been highlighted in media reports because he's been bringing the wood to practice. Fox laid out a couple of running backs in the running game.
