Fox drives in from Phila for fund raiser

SUNDAY SPECIAL
By TODD PORTER

Professional athletes from Stark County never have forgotten from where they came. No one has embraced community service the last two weekends like GlenOak High School graduate Dustin Fox.

The Philadelphia Eagles defensive back hopped in his car last Friday and made the drive from Philly to Canton to attend a 24-hour fundraiser walk for Dr. Ajay Seth. Fox and Seth struck up a friendship after Fox broke his arm during his senior season at Ohio State. Seth was in on the surgery, then walked Fox through the recovery process.

A year ago, Seth's 17-month old daughter, Jayani, died of a brain tumor. Seth and his family have spent the last year organizing a foundation to honor the Jayani's memory - Jayani's Army - to help local families with children going through serious medical problems.

Fox's 61/2-hour drive came on the heels of an NFL practice.

Two weeks ago, Fox flew in from Philadelphia to take part in a fundraiser for GlenOak's new football stadium. The former Golden Eagle was happy to lose a few dollars at the Bob Commings Memorial stag and casino night at Our Lady of Peace.

"Canton is everything to me," Fox said. "It's the place I grew up and the place I want to make home someday. Anything I can do to help with the position I've been blessed to be in, I will. I'll do anything I can.

"When Ajay and I became good friends, Jayani was healthy. Then she was diagnosed and passed away. I went through the whole process. It became important to do anything I can to make it a little easier on families who have to go through something similar."

Fox wasn't the only athlete in attendance. Ohio State-bound center Kosta Koufos, a GlenOak graduate, came to the walk. Fox's brother and former St. Louis practice squad player, Derek Fox, was there. Indiana Pacers guard and McKinley graduate Keith McLeod couldn't attend, but donated to the event.

"Having Dustin come back was a pretty big thing," said Seth, a surgeon at Spectrum Orthopedics. "Two years ago, he and I talked about wanting to start a foundation, and now it's coming to reality. He's on our board. It's a huge support to my wife and I to know how much this means to him and some of the other local athletes that we're giving back to the community."

Fox and his wife, Nicole, made it to the walk at midnight. They stayed until 2 a.m., got some sleep, and returned in the morning.

The event raised nearly $40,000. Almost 500 people participated.

"We had the idea for the walk because that's how we spent our last week with (Jayani)," Seth said. "We never expected to raise over $38,000."

A Web site is under construction at jayanisarmy.org. Donations may be sent to Jayani's Army, P.O. Box 8864, Canton, OH 44711.

FOX ON THE FIELD

During Eagle OTAs (organized team activities), Fox has made progress. He is working with the second-team defensive backs and hopes to be back on the field this week after suffering a pulled hamstring last week.

"The defensive coordinator (Jim Johnson) has been making comments to me about how well I'm progressing, so I guess that's good feedback," he said.

Looks like Dustin was cut by the Eagles...too bad he couldn't stay healthy

The List
A list of 22 players who reportedly were cut was inadvertently posted on the Eagles' Web site yesterday, and then quickly removed. A team official declined to confirm that the list was correct and said the Eagles would officially announce their cuts today at 4 p.m. The complete list posted on the Web site looked like this: running back Nate Ilaoa; fullback Jason Davis; fullback/long snapper Jeremy Cain; wide receivers Michael Gasperson, J.J. Outlaw, Zac Collie and Jeremy Bloom; tight end Lee Vickers; offensive linemen Jonathan Palmer, Jasper Harvey, Jacob Hobbs and Pat McCoy; defensive end Marques Murrell; defensive tackles Mauricio Lopez and Ian Scott; linebackers Akeem Jordan and Dedrick Roper; defensive backs Dustin Fox, Nick Graham, Marcus Paschal and Erick Harris; and punter Dirk Johnson.

FOX ON HUNT

Since being released by Philadelphia, Dustin Fox has returned to Canton and is working out at his alma mater, GlenOak High School. The Eagles released him in the final cut before the regular season.

But the former Buckeye isn't giving up. Fox flew to Seattle last week and ran a 4.5 40-yard time in a workout with the Seahawks, during a downpour.

On Monday, Fox is heading to Jacksonville for a workout. Mike Tice is the assistant head coach and tight ends coach. Tice was head coach in Minnesota and drafted Fox originally. Dave Campo is the secondary coach.

"I know I can play," Fox said. "When I got released, Jacksonville was one of the teams I looked at, and I hoped they'd call, and they did. ... They'd be looking at me more as a safety, which is good."

Fox was playing cornerback in Philly. His body type and athleticism seem more suited to safety. The main reason the Eagles cut him is Fox missed 10 days of practice during two-a-days. That's about 20 fewer evaluations for the staff.

"I kind of expected it," he said. "I got a vibe."

Fox has a good chance of being signed. He still has practice squad eligibility left. Because he didn't play in at least three games last year, and he spent his rookie season in Minnesota in the injured reserve, Fox needs two more seasons to be fully vested in the NFL pension.

"It's been a tough two weeks," he said. "A lot goes through your mind when you're not hearing anything. It's funny. Everything changes with one phone call, and you're still chasing that dream."

Bills Add Fox To Practice Squad
by Chris Brown, Lead Journalist Last Updated: 9/19/2007 4:03 PM ET

With the Bills precariously close to having a dangerous shortage at cornerback the club signed free agent Dustin Fox to their practice squad Wednesday.

The former third-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings (2005) was most recently with the Philadelphia Eagles. He spent most of last season on the Eagles practice squad, though he was briefly called up to the active roster for two weeks appearing in one game.

He was re-signed by Philadelphia last offseason, but was released in final cuts Sept.1.

A former four-year starter at Ohio State, Fox will recognize some faces on Buffalo's roster as he played with Tim Anderson, Donte Whitner and Ashton Youboty in college.

Fox provides the Bills with cornerback insurance as they currently have just four healthy corners on the roster, and previously had none on the practice squad.

Fox joins Buffalo practice squad
Thursday, September 20, 2007

BUFFALO Dustin Fox was signed to the Buffalo Bills practice squad Wednesday, rejoining the NFL after being released Sept. 1 by the Philadelphia Eagles.

A former third-round pick of the Vikings, Fox spent most of 2006 on the Eagles' practice squad, joining the active roster for two games and appearing in one. The former GlenOak High School and Ohio State player joins a team that has just four healthy cornerbacks on its roster.

Hey,
Dustin has just been moved to the Bills 53 man roster with all the injuries they have received this season. As a season ticket holder I am very excited to see this happen. I'm going to the Dolphins game on Dec. 9th maybe a chance of Whitner, Youboty, Fox, and Ginn all on the field at the same time :).

Bills Promote Fox To 53-Man Roster
by Chris Brown, Lead Journalist Last Updated: 11/23/2007 3:28 PM ET

Injury has once again forced the Bills hand in making a roster move. On Friday Buffalo released linebacker Leon Joe and filled the vacant roster spot with practice squad cornerback Dustin Fox.

With cornerback Jerametrius Butler questionable for Sunday's game at Jacksonville, Buffalo was faced with the prospect of entering Sunday's game with just three healthy cornerbacks.

Terrence McGee, Jabari Greer and Ashton Youboty were the only healthy cornerbacks available to defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, so Fox was promoted to the active roster for depth purposes.

Fox, who was signed to Buffalo's practice squad on Sept. 19, was last with the Philadelphia Eagles before being released by the club on Sept. 1. He spent two weeks on the Eagles active roster and saw action in one game against the Carolina Panthers in 2006. He spent the rest of last season on Philadelphia's practice squad.

SUNDAY SPECIAL: Fox getting active with Bills
Sunday, November 25, 2007
SUNDAY SPECIAL
BY TODD PORTERMultimedia

Two weeks ago, Dustin Fox was running routes as a wide receiver on Buffalo?s practice squad. Today, he?s back at his rightful position, defensive back. Fox could play in today?s game at Jacksonville.

The Bills activated Fox on Friday from the practice squad, where he spent the last seven weeks. Buffalo signed Fox after Philadelphia cut the former third-round draft pick in September.

?I thought there was a chance, because I?d been practicing really well,? Fox said. ?I thought it could happen sooner, but right now we?re depleted at defensive back, so it?s the right time.?

To make room for Fox, the Bills released linebacker Leon Joe. Buffalo needs depth at cornerback because Jeramertrius Butler (calf) is questionable today. That meant Buffalo could have had just three healthy cornerbacks ? Jarai Greer, Terrence McGee and Ashton Youboty ? for today?s game if Butler can?t go. Fox spent seven weeks on the Bills? practice squad. He will wear No. 35 today if active.

The life of a practice squad player isn?t glorious. Every team is allowed to sign as many as nine practice squad players, who are paid a minimum of $4,700 a week. Those salaries are not guaranteed.

Buffalo has just two receivers on its practice squad. When the Bills were preparing for New England, Fox spent time running routes as a receiver. Defensive coaches were not too happy when one of their guys made a couple of catches on the No. 1 defense.

?Getting activated to the roster makes all the hard work you do in practice worthwhile,? Fox said. ?All you do on the practice squad is practice for no reason other than to prepare your guys for the team they?re going to play. This is a great reward for busting you butt.?

The reward is quite a bounty, too. Because of his experience, Fox will get a raise of about $12,000 a week from his practice squad check each week he remains on the roster.

Being on the practice squad can be a rough adjustment for a former All-Big Ten player like Fox was at Ohio State. But it?s also a blessing because there aren?t many jobs that pay that well to practice.

?There are times when you?re like, ?I should be playing. I know I?m good enough,? ? Fox said. ?Then there are times you think about the guys sitting at home who are talented enough to be here, and they?re looking for jobs. I?m getting a check every week and I get to guard Lee Evans in practice and improve.?

Circumstances out of his control can take his spot away. Last year, the Eagles activated him, and he played on Monday Night Football. Three days later, he was back on the practice squad. An injury at another position meant Philadelphia needed to send Fox to the practice squad and activate another player.

?I know it can be taken away as quickly as it came,? Fox said. ?I?m going to do my best to keep my spot.?

FOX IN TOWN

It?s uncanny how the Bills have collected former Ohio State defensive backs.

Cornerbacks Antoine Winfield and Nate Clements became megamillion free agents after establishing themselves as Buffalo first-round picks.

Buffalo?s current secondary features 2006 Round 1 pick Donte Whitner at safety and 2006 Round 3 pick Ashton Yobouty as a sub-package cornerback.

Former GlenOak High School and Ohio State star Dustin Fox made his first tackle as a Bill recently, on special teams, after being promoted from the practice squad. He is listed as the No. 2 right cornerback behind Terrence McGee.

Whitner grew up in Cleveland as Browns fan. He was 9 when the team made the 1994 playoffs, 14 when it came back from a three-year absence.

?I?d like to see the Cleveland Browns in the playoffs,? Whitner said, ?but moreso I?d like to see the Buffalo Bills in there.

?That?s hard. I?m going to have family that?s rooting for the Browns to win.?

Dustin Fox
Fox is another former third-round pick (of the Minnesota Vikings) who has failed to live up to expectations at the NFL level. He's got solid size (5'11", 200) and the pedigree (Ohio State); he also played well on special teams. He may earn a spot on next year's roster, but only if this position goes untouched during the off-season.
