Just wanted to bump this to say that I'm really impressed with Washington's emergence last year and I'll go out on a limb and say that most likely very few on the site predicted that out of him as a frosh CB.

He and Malcolm could be one of the top corner tandems in the country next year depending on how much DW develops and improves in the off-season.

The emergence of a second quality corner could seal the deal for the 2007 defense (cautious optimism). The ability to play solid man, will allow Heacock to dig a little deeper into the pressure schemes, using the safeties, as well as the backers. Washington certainly has the potential, and this spring is critical to his development.

I don't expect to see a lot of solid man out of Heacock regardless. The man is in love with zone defense. Then again, some of this will depend on what kind of push our new DTs get and of course (our DEs I'm not worried about).

I thought we played an aggressive defense in '05 when we had an experienced corp. However, last year, with inexperience in the secondary, Heacock didn't bring as much blitzing, probably because he didn't have the same trust in the back 7 as he did in '05. I think the softer zone defense last year had more to do with the fact that we had an inexperienced defense.

Let the record show that Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr. were not the first Indiana natives to make a name for themselves at Ohio State in the past year. The basketball stars stole the show by January, but by then, fellow Indianapolis native Donald Washington already had enjoyed a fine freshman season as a cornerback on the football team.
Washington's success, though, falls into the category of a little-known secret. Because he was the nickel cornerback, and because he was more solid than spectacular, this Hoosier is more like a "Who's he?"
"I'll let the superstars get all the (publicity)," Washington said. "It doesn't really matter to me. People knew I was the starter, people knew I was on the field. The publicity, that will come with making plays."

TALL ORDER:@ Even at 6-foot-1, Donald Washington was 1 of the tallest kids on his basketball team at Franklin Central High School in Indianapolis. That meant he had to guard the center for Lawrence North. That kid was named Greg Oden, who stood 7 foot and could touch the rim without jumping.

There was a matchup problem, to say the least.

"I played post," he said Tuesday, wearing a wide grin. "I had the privilege to guard Greg a couple of times. Guarding Greg, it was like me standing against a tree that was in the front yard."

Oden had a teammate then, just like last season when they led Ohio State to the NCAA championship game, named Mike Conley Jr. Oden and Conley went 1 and 4 in the NBA draft this summer.

"We didn't beat them in the four years that I played," Washington said. "They had some good guys on their team. You guys know who they are."

Franklin Central's Donald Washington starts at defensive back for Ohio State

James Laurinaitis, Ohio State's All-America linebacker, doesn't care if no one else realizes how good Donald Washington is.
Laurinaitis knows.
"He has tremendous athletic ability. He's very underrated," Laurinaitis said. "I think he flies under the radar, as do a lot of our defensive players."
Washington, a former standout at Franklin Central High School, is a starting cornerback for the fourth-ranked Buckeyes, who bring one of the nation's best defenses into Ross-Ade Stadium for Saturday night's nationally televised showdown with No. 23 Purdue.
Washington starts for a defense that leads the Big Ten in every major category. The Buckeyes are second in the country in total defense, holding opponents to 197.6 yards per game, and third nationally in points allowed at 7.2 per game.
"It's a great feeling, but it's humbling at the same time," said Washington, part of a secondary that will defend Purdue's potent passing attack. "It lets me know I can come out here and compete with these guys and contribute to something special like Ohio State."

BUT after last night, it's like having TWO Malcolms out there! Amazing tackling. Simply awesome.

We officially have bookend corners.

Balls are now being thrown all day at Chimdi simply because QBs have no other options. Throw at Malcolm, get picked off. Throw at DWash, get picked off. Throw at Russell, ... Almost get picked off :wink:
