DB Christian Bryant (Official Thread)

Ohio State football: Bryant putting best foot forward
Sophomore safety earns starting job after getting healthy
By Tim May
The Columbus Dispatch Friday September 30, 2011 5

The way Christian Bryant has been playing the past two weeks, about the only thing that could keep him off the field is a bad case of athlete?s foot.

But that?s exactly what happened to the safety last season, just when he seemed on his way to being Ohio State?s freshman of the year on defense.

?You?ve just got to take care of your body,? Bryant said of the lesson he learned from the episode, which eventually required surgery. ?That?s what I?m doing right now.?

Along the way, though, he has been letting himself go in practice and in games. That?s the main reason Bryant will make his second start on Saturday against Michigan State after backing up junior Orhian Johnson the first two weeks of the season.

?Christian is a very confident guy. That is one of the things he brings to our defense,? coach Luke Fickell said. ?It doesn?t matter how old you are, whether you?re a freshman or a senior, some people just naturally have that.?

Bryant brought a spark in a 24-6 loss to the University of Miami when he entered the game for Johnson in the second quarter with the Buckeyes trailing 14-0. Co-defensive coordinator Paul Haynes, who coaches safeties, sat Bryant down the next day to let him know what the effort had earned him.

?He told me, ?We?re going to throw you in this week as the starter,? ? Bryant said. ? ?You?ve just got to make plays.? That was a great feeling for me. I think that I accomplished something.?

Had a great chance at a pick today, as well as one he coulda/shoulda/woulda had at Miami. Hope he keeps getting his hands on the ball, because I think he could be a real game changer for us if he can get his hands around a few.

Whiffed big time on the slow, white tailback's touchdown. Make that tackle and we're still in it.

Yup- he went for the kill shot instead of the tackle.

Of course, he did that earlier too and it worked pretty well. Time and place, I guess.

Yeah he did go for the kill on burkhead, but hes young a made a mistake. Hes the headhunting safety we need back there though.

Yep. Besides that terrible killshot attempt on Burkhead, I thought he looked pretty good last night. That's a tough play to make, but it is what it is. He just needs to play a little bit more controlled and he'll be fine. Seemed like he was all over the place.

Honestly, Bryant is pretty much directly responsible for two of Nebraska's TDs. He whiffed on that tackle going for a highlight play and was caught looking in the backfield during the deep TD pass. Bad game imo, if only for those two critical plays. He will have better discipline with age.

I agree with 3074326. This was not a good game at all by Bryant. It wasn't just the 2 big plays he gave up but I thought he was lost in space at times. I get excited for the big hits as much as anyone, but I will take him doing his 1/11th any day of the week over a 1 good hit or two.
