DB Cameron Martinez (transfer to Boston College)

MARTINEZ MAKES PICK-SIX IN DEFENSIVE DEBUT

In a week where Ohio State made changes to try to fix its ailing defense, Martinez was glad that one of those changes was to give him a substantial role in the secondary.

“They always just kind of talked about be ready. They put us in position in practice to always stay ready and to be successful. That’s just kind of what they’ve been doing every week, and my name was called this weekend, and it was really fun,” Martinez said after the game. “I had a blast doing everything that they had to do.”

With all the hate Shaw has gotten, I love seeing him fired up and willing to be lead blocker for Martinez. I think that means a lot, especially when you're struggling, to show fight and willingness to block and celebrate for your teammates.

I was very impressed with Shaw's communication on this and getting the convoy together to get Martinez to the end zone.

I've gotta be honest in saying that Shaw shouldn't be on the field as much as he is right now. But I don't question his effort and that's a hell of a job getting him home there. And Cam had some moments that make me think he could get there. Obviously a great athlete, just needs to learn the position.

Yeah, I think it’s a combination of instincts and coaching that yields a result like that pick-6 return. The guys knew that if they set up a wall on the opposite side of the field they had a great chance to score. And Shaw was pointing out blocks and correctly making the decision to lead Martinez all the way until the final block on the QB.

“I FEEL LIKE I’M IN THE BEST SHAPE OF MY LIFE, AND I FEEL REALLY GOOD ABOUT THIS YEAR.”– CAMERON MARTINEZ

Martinez will be happy to take the field wherever Ohio State believes he can make an impact.

“I feel like I can move around a lot,” Martinez said during the Special Skills Football Invitational last month. “I played multiple positions, I’ve done that the past couple of years here. So whatever the coaching staff wants me to do, and also punt returns and things like that as well, I’ll be ready.”
