COLUMBUS ? It wasn't a trick question.
Perhaps Adam Griffin was surprised at the answer to the query, "Who is the best special teams player in his family?"
Said the 5-foot-8, 180-pound sophomore at Ohio State, "Um, me?"
It's a pretty safe assumption Griffin's father didn't do the special teams coverages he does.
Adam Griffin's father ? two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin ? was too busy doing everything else.
In his first extensive action as a Buckeye, after two years of inactivity, Adam Griffin recorded two solo tackles on special teams during Ohio State's 56-10 win over Miami of Ohio on Saturday.
The T-shirt he said he was given by the coaching staff doesn't compare to the two Heismans his father won, but he will gladly take it.
"I think I've grown up tremendously the last few years not getting much playing time or whatever," Griffin said. "Now I finally get a chance to get on the field and contribute to the team."
Getting onto the field has been the problem for Griffin. After being offered a scholarship, a surprise to some, by former coach Jim Tressel, Griffin was redshirted two years ago and was a backup special teams player last year.
Needless to say, a backup special teams player doesn't get much playing time.
Griffin said he didn't "come here to sit around and do nothing" and voiced frustration about his inactivity during his first two seasons.
"I remember going home at night being mad at the world," he said.
