David Sanders Jr. (OL Tennessee)

Ohio State wasn‘t able to flip David Sanders Jr. away from Tennessee, but it wasn’t due to a lack of effort down the stretch.

The No. 1 offensive tackle in the 2025 class told 247Sports on Monday he was “very close” to flipping to the Buckeyes in his recruitment when OSU made a late push for the North Carolina prospect in November, hosting him for its second-to-last home game of the regular season against Indiana.

"Everybody knows I went to Ohio State — like, that late visit — and they had a very late push to come try to get me to flip there," Sanders told 247Sports. "And I had a lot of thoughts about it, so I was thinking about it. I wasn't 100 percent sure on signing day.

"We have until the 6th — December 4th, 5th or 6th, you can sign — so I was like, 'There's no need to rush it on this day. Let's just wait and make sure this is the right decision.' We went over it, and I came the next day and I signed."

Sanders told 247Sports he is “very happy” with his decision to sign with Tennessee, but said he has “nothing but respect” for Ohio State. And as we’ve seen in the current recruiting climate, finishing second for a recruit has never mattered more than it does now considering sometimes they end up on your roster eventually via the transfer portal.

Just sayin':

This is the type of recruit with higher risk than possible reward. Especially when he can and will probably bolt at some point, and OSU can just go and grab a experienced and serviceable kid out of the portal.
i think when day or urban or tress talk about the “culture” around the program, this is exactly the type of thing they’re talking about.

it’s not about “competitive drive” or “the brotherhood” or playing “violent and aggressive” or “these guys would do anything for each other”… everybody at this level has some version of those cliches.

the difference is this kinda stuff… where it’s all about the bling and the glitz and luxury condos for my uncle and a taycan for my cousin or a loan for my brother’s restaurant, all spoken about and flaunted about publicly, to show how much a big name program “values” me.

and when the next sugar-daddy shows up with more bling, you tap out.

nothing wrong with the kids (sanders or whoever), but it’s just a different mentality and a different outlook.

EDIT: i guess what i’m saying is that “culture fit” has to do with understanding motivations and what really drives someone.

What I'll find in interesting, is what happens to the house, cars, etc if the kid doesn't produce. Because he better be in the 2 deep in year 1 and a starter/All SEC in year 2 for what he got. I'm not saying that will happen, but what is the expectation.
But something tells me Onianwa and/or Daniels has a better 25-26 year

I think NIL deals are trending that way and I can't blame the ones attaching strings who ponied up the money. You better stick to your commitment to the school after all that money is ponied up. I wanted Sanders bad and there is a chance we see him again in the Portal, but some of those comments are off putting.

Agreed 100% that Onianwa and/or Daniels are more ready to go and with Simmons and Fryar gone, we need OTs that are game ready. I could see Montgomery swinging out to RT, but we did need OTs with game experience. Sanders would have been awesome down the road a year or so, but I am in alignment with our NIL money mostly going to established players rather than high school kids.

Well, the thing is with NIL, is that its actual people's money going to these players. So people are going to take an offense if they put up their hard earned money and this kid leaves, or doesn't live up to his billing. I know that NIL isn't supposed to be incentivizing play, but let's be honest, scUM doesn't pony up $10mil for Underwood to sit for 2yrs, just like Tenn isn't paying millions for Sanders to sit either. There will be some hard conversations with families in the next few years, because I can bet the NIL at aTm is LIVID that they forked over tens of millions for that '22 class and have nothing to show for them. I would put in the fine print too that if you transfer you forfeit some of that money. I'm hearing UGA is doing that to Damon Wilson, but how long before schools use that against UGA, unless they all start doing it
