Attorneys representing Major League Baseball have filed a lawsuit against the non-profit elementary school founded by former NBA star David Robinson over the use of a logo once used by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, according to a report in The Los Angeles Times.

Robinson's San Antonio-based Carver Academy, which opened in 2001, apparently uses an interlocking "CA" as its logo. But the school's lawyers are busy battling attorneys representing the Angels, who claim people might be confused on deceived into believing that the team is associated with the school.
Here's the catch: As The Times points out, the team has not used the logo in nine years.

The Angels, on the other hand, say they have the right to approve the use of their names and logos in connection with "educational services."

Carver uses different colors in its logo, and does not include a halo.

That the Angels no longer use the "CA" logo (which they wore from 1993 to '96) is not relevant simply because MLB officials still license old logos.

The case nonetheless illustrates the challenge big-league teams face in protecting their rights to names, logos and designs. And while the Angels are listed as the objecting party, the New York law firm that filed the objections is retained not by the team but by Major League Baseball.

Angels owner Arte Moreno told The Times he was not aware of the Carver case, but did not have a problem with the school's logo use.

"It would be like us going to the Crystal Cathedral," he said, "and saying you can talk about the angels."

As for Robinson, he too was unaware of the trademark dispute. And he said he would be happy to speak with Moreno to help settle this flap.

"If it were that simple, sure," Robinson said.

What's more, Robinson seems to be wondering why this conflict arose in the first place.

"This should be no problem at all," he said. "I'm surprised it would become such a thing."

So why the lawsuit by MLB?

Don't you know that MLB is loosely associated with the devil? Leave it to those bastards to strip the game down to nothing. If it wasn't for the inherant greatness of the actual SPORT of baseball, MLB would be in the tank. They are barely keeping their heads above water because of their own greed. Ironically, major league baseball has become everything that is great about america and wrong with america all wrapped up in one horrible mess.

I don't think many born in the last 25 years would agere with you there. The MLB loses to the NFL & NCAA CFB in most things, IMO.

They been showing the symbols on the news everyday here, get over it ANGELS, they do not look alike! I don't know why they would want to mess with someone like David Robinson.
Um, there definitely is a similarity. I find it weird that they are throwing a hissy fit, given that this sort of thing happens all of the time. But if I didn't know better, I would think the one on the right (the 93 angels logo) was the upgraded version of the carver academy logo.

It's an even bigger joke because sports are not very big in California... so I doubt most people not paid to write articles even noticed.

Michigan's helmets are a staple of HS uniforms. A major Georgia program benefits from Green Bay's logo (one of the two borrowed that one), plus plenty of HS teams (ie Glenville).

Oregon State actually came all the way to the corner of Northeast Ohio to stop out local High School (Painesville Riverside) from using a "Beaver" logo that was almost identical to theirs.

I'd have a picture of Pam Anderson on the side of that helmet so fast it'd make their head spin. All kinds of shit you can do with the "Beaver" nickname.

As far as the baseball logo infringement goes, just another example of Pud Selig at work. MLB never misses a chance to make themselves look like a bunch of assholes.

Pud was the "We don't get French benefits?" guy when he was selling cars.
