Darrell Hazell (official thread)

If Hazell has a clue he'll decline and wait for something better. Purdue would be career suicide, IMHO.

With what he's done at Kent I think he could bring Purdue up to a second tier B1G team and challenge for the B1G title every 3-4 years. He could hit the OSU recruiting grounds and battle the MSU's of the world for the players OSU doesn't want.

I'm not sure what job he would be holding out for that would be better than Purdue. I don't see anything good opening up in the B1G for at least another couple years. The ACC is going down and the SEC probably wouldn't be a good fit. I would love to see him stay at Kent for another couple years, but I would hate to see him end up at scUM.

Hope was fired today. If PU has a clue they'll contact Hazell.

If Hazell has a clue he would wait for a better offer. I still think that if the Maryland job opens up, that would be the best place for him. He could get build up the program while they are still in the ACC and have things in place when they join the B1G. Maryland has also had more coaches come in there and win than has Purdue. This tells me that coaches can be successful there. Purdue's most successful coach lately has been Joe Tiller who never had a 10 win season. I realize that Tiller did take them to the Rose Bowl, but that was the first time since the 60s.

The Maryland job isn't opening up in the near future. They're still paying Friedgen. They're not going to fire Edsall and put a third head coach on the payroll.

I didn't say Hazell should or would take the Purdue job. I said they should contact him. Two different things, entirely.

That said, is Hazell going to get offered a prime BCS job based off a good season at Kent? What if he stays at Kent and the realities of that job set in, sending his team to 5-7 next season? Are they really going to be +22, again, in turnovers next year?

It's one thing to say he should wait, but the alternative could be his stock declines. There's no sure answer. Turner Gill probably wishes he had stayed at Buffalo and waited for something better than Kansas. Urban Meyer is glad he left Bowling Green for Utah.

I think a lot would depend on the coaching turnover this year. If Butch Jones is a hot commodity then the Cincinnati job would be available. Hope wasn't even making $1m a year. His staff was the lowest paid in the conference. I just don't think it's that attractive. It's not a stepping stone, it's a dead end.

You have to go back to '78-'80 for the last time Purdue was any good over a period of time. Tiller came in and took the league by storm in '97 (didn't play Ohio State or Michigan either) and finished 9-3. His next best season was the 8-4 finish in 2000 when Purdue got to the Rose Bowl. Purdue lost at least five games in 8 of his 12 seasons. This was with the best coach they've had in over 30 years!

Anyone wonder what might've happened had Hazell not bolted for Kent State right before the scandal hit? We might've had a scUM win last year as well...

I wouldn't change a thing. Hazell might be a great coach, but Meyer is a great coach.

This isn't going to help:

If Kent can win the MAC and jump up a little higher in the BCS (hopefully not high enough to get murdered in a BCS game) Hazell might have his pick of open jobs. On the bright side it took one coach to build the KSU bball program and then several other coaches were able to maintain it for a decade so if Hazell does leave they just need to find another good coach to take over.
