I enjoy cruises... we tend to go on at least one per year (sometimes it is a full blown two week cruise, other times it is a weekend escape). I've been on several lines, in many different types of ships... as an fyi, Carnival has larger rooms than most of the other companies, however they use a lot of plastic and loud colors all over the boat. Carnival is more of a party line, they have very good shows (at least compared to the other companies), the other passengers tend to be younger and up for more parties.

I assume you're going to Freeport and Nassau? Nassau is fun, the ship docks in the middle of downtown... Lots of shopping, bars, and a short cab to Atlantis (large gaming area if you're into gambling). Freeport stinks! The ship docks at what appeared to be an oil refinery/holding station. You will have to take a taxi into "town" (not much in the form of shopping). I strongly suggest you go on an excursion when you're in Freeport, or go to the casino next to the beach, you can gamble and spend time on the beach. Freeport was hit by a hurricane a few years ago, they still haven?t recovered. There are buildings that have been left to rot, along with forest area's where all the trees were blown over, and never replaced. I was there about a year ago, so I assume not much has changed.

Eat breakfast in the dinning room (not the upstairs buffet); if you can eat lunch in the dinning room I'd suggest that as well. The buffet area has limited seating (the ship is older... newer ships have much more room), with long lines at the buffet.

You might be able to sneak on a bottle or two of wine when you initially embark the ship. Once the ship leaves, there is no way you will be allowed to bring alcohol on the ship from the Bahamas... just an fyi.

Getting through customs is a joke... bring back Cubans if you want... you will not get caught. They ask for your passport, look at you for a second, and then tell you to keep moving.

If you shop in Nassau, and are over your limit, don't tell customs... again they don't check when you re-enter the US.

I've been on many, many cruises and very much enjoy them (although I must say I'm a huge Celebrity fan... talk about upscale pampered at a reasonable price). If you have questions let me know...

We sneak a bottle of rum on, when we first board... we then pick up a "soda card" (soda pop isn't free, they chare $2 per glass or $5 per day, you pick it) and drink diet coke with rum throughout the trip. If it is a lone trip, we will also sneak on a bottle or two of wine. Carnival and RC are stricter than Celebrity, however the savings are huge if you can pull it off.

The bars will have a drink of the day that is sold at a reduced price; they also have "happy hour" (although the drink prices are still high). If you want to drink a lot, do it on the islands... I don't recall if Carnival has wine tasting or not, if they do, it is a good bang for your buck. They usually offer six glasses of wine for $15 (and they give a generous pour as well)...

Taking a cruise next month...got a few questions:

--I know the food is free, but how bad are the drink prices?

--What onboard activities are worth looking into...daytime and evening?

--Are there any "surprise" costs that you did not expect?

Going to the Bahamas via Carnival...

What shore excursions did you take?

I'm figuring a decent liquor drink will be $6-8...how much for a beer?

If was female, I would definitely be gay...

Here's my 2 cents worth:

Charges: Carnival like many other cruise ship lines will automatically charge you $10 per person per day for tips. They say it is "for your convenience"; however, it is actually to get more $$$ out of everyone. You can have this removed and tip a lesser amount if you wish. In my opinion the cabin steward, dining room waiter, and dining room assistant waiter works hard for their tips and should be appropriately rewarded. Some other the people that some ships suggest tipping is a "stretch", i.e. matre'd, head waiter, head of housekeeping, etc.

Ships are adding "surprise costs"; to a lot of activities that used to be free, examples: $10 per person for aerobics class and $10 per person for a wine tasting session, etc. Other stuff that the ship sells will be higher than what you would expect to spend in SC, examples: ship's photos and drug store items in the ship's store, etc.

Booze: They sell a "bucket of beer" (something like 6 cans in a bucket of ice" at a small savings.

Some people have been known to take their own liquor on board. Technically Carnival doesn't allow it; however, you can put a bottle or two in your luggage and it will get through TSA without a problem. TSA screens your luggage for embarkation and are looking for guns not booze. Carnival only screens your hand carries when you return to the ship from a port and will confiscate (hold) any liquor that you buy in port and return it to you the last night of the cruise. You can also take cans of pop on the ship for a mixer. In addition, you need to take a large sipper glass. The room steward usually keeps your ice bucket full. Mix a drink in your room and consume it on the pool deck. Nobody will be the wiser. Carnival does allow you to take wine on board; but they will charge you a $10 (or so) corkage fee if you bring the bottle into the dining room with you. However, you can open it you room, get a wine glass from any bar, pour some in the glass, and carry the glass to dinner with you. Everyone will assume you just bought the drink at a bar before you came in, etc.

Casino: My observation: If you play the slots in the casino don't assume that the payoffs are the same as Las Vegas. They aren't obligated to follow Nevada's gaming laws. More people hit on the slots the first few night than the last couple nights. I don't know if they change the payout or not, but it is possible. They have no incentive to let you win the last night as they know you won't be back, etc.

Excursions: You can usually do most excursions (that the ship sells) on your own a lot cheaper especially if you have a group of four (or so people). There will be lines of taxis at the port begging you to book a tour with them. Splitting the taxi cost 4 ways will be a lot cheaper per person than buying the ship's tour. Another option is booking a tour in advance with a local tour operator. You can google "day tours (add specific island)" and find sites of local companies who will meet you at the pier for your tour. On some islands they will sell tours at the pier.

In the Bahamas I have just taken a taxi to a nice beach. If you do a taxi, always negotiate and agree to the price before you get in and get him to agree to receive payment after he returns you to the ship, etc. Also, on past visits to Nassau I've gone to Paradise Island, gone to Cable Beach, did the Blue Lagoon tour, and did a catamaran sail/snorkel tour, etc. For Nassau ideas check out: Nassau Things To Do - Travel Guides - VirtualTourist.com

If you like to snorkel and have your own snorkel equipment bring it with you. If you are SCUBA certifed don't forget you PADI card.

Activities: Some of the activities can be fun even if they are "hokey". Examples: pool games, and competitions (putting, shuffleboard, basketball foul shooting, ping pong, ring toss, darts, and trivia, etc.). The best activity on the ship is go up to the "topless" deck (if they still have it) and check out the scenery, etc. and it is doesn't cost anything. If you have never been on a cruise and want to see a sample "daily program activities sheet" called the Carnival Capers let me know. I'll try to scan a couple and email them to you.

The evening shows in the main lounge are worth going to. Sometimes a comedian will have a late evening "adult show" in the disco or a smalller lounge.

Gay cruises: If you didn't know there are several companies that charter the whole ship and sell it as a gay cruise. Such as: http://www.gaycruisevacations.com/

I also love cruises.

I haven't seen any mention of the shows (I scanned quickly), but they are generally worth the time. Sometimes downright excellent. I also agree that the participatory activities can be fun, albeit hokey. They do everything from Karaoke to dance competition to the Newlywed game.

Stay away from the casinos unless you are playing table games, and even then the house cut is sometimes out of line. There is often a poker or black jack tourney that is fun as well.

Get your picture taken whenever you can. You have no obligation to buy, they are sometimes excellent and not that outrageous.

Food tends to be good but not four star, but it is always better in the dining room.

Whatever you do don't miss the midnight nacho bar. Lots of different types of cheese and salsa - and they make animals out of the chips.

If you are going on a short Cruise don't judge other cruises by it. Since they are cheap they tend to draw a different clientele than longer cruises and the ships tend to cater to that clientele. A bit louder, drunker and ruder than my tastes.

Leave tomorrow :)

I dropped 15 in hopes of gaining 20...back to a slim trim 200 right now but that is about to change this week.

Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life...but it will sure make for a fun cruise :)
