Flast was not considered a power in those days - that was when BB was playing any big team he could and was starting to turn that program in to the monolith it became by the mid 90s, Stanford had Elway though, and was considered.. well, not a power, but still pretty good.

Actually, Bowden had already turned FSU around by the time they played us. They were 10-2 in 1977, 8-3 in 1978, 11-1 in 1979 (losing in the Orange Bowl to Oklahoma), and 10-2 in 1980. They also beat us both those years, 36-27 in 1981 and 34-17 in 1982, so they were already a power, albeit not quite the monster program they became in the late '80s.

I'm sure you're correct - Hell, I was only 8 in 1978, what do I know old man. :biggrin: How about, not considered a "consistent" power at that point. Kinda like a K-State in that the wheels could come out from under them at any time (But ultimately didn't)

Acutally, looking at the teams they played those years they were beating up some pretty meager competition.

I'll take that bet. The Kittys will be improved this season, but they will be no where near "sick". They will be lucky to be 5-3 in conference.

I always make one attempt per ND SOS trainwreck thread to inject some logic and fact. To date it has never worked but here goes V 913.0

Timespan: 2000-2004 seasons (this fucking century, a place domers don't like to dwell)

ND opponents combined records: 434-300 (.591)
OSU opponents records: 421-341 (.552)

Difference: .039 win % or less than 1/2 a game for a 12 game season.

ND team record: 35-25 (.583)
OSU record: 48-13 (.787)

Difference: .204 win % or 2 1/2 games in a 12 game season.

ND win % vs Opponents win %: -.008
OSU win % vs Opponents win %: +.235

Just some facts to back up the point I always make and he never gets or will acknowledge;

when you suck your team enhances your opponents win % and therefore makes the SOS look stronger. When you are an elite team and beat the shit out of opponents it lowers their win % and makes SOS look weaker.

Thats a huge difference in the two teams win % for a pretty insignificant difference in opponents win %.

To further illustrate my point the past 2 years ND opponents have a 185-110 record (.627) but ND has only managed to go 11-13 themselves (.458).

00-02 ND opponents were 249-190 (.567) while ND was 24-12 (.667).

Amazing how that works huh?

i can NEVER get people to understand this. they wonder why teams like SDSU and UNC have such high SoS.

Don't you get sick of it? The "Penn State's back, I assure you" crap? It's been a LONG time now fellas. It's over. I don't care what recruits they get, I don't care if JoPa is a legend. It's over. I don't care if they were close in this game or that, I don't care that the cupboards aren't bare. It's over.

PSU is not back
PSU won't be back until Jo retires, at the earliest. This isn't a slam on one of the greatest coaches ever to coach, it's just reality. Careers end. His is done.

They do have a pretty good D next season (or should), I'll give em that. Of course, their O still stinks on ice.
This may seem like a departure from the topic of this thread, but as I think about it, it's right in line. Misperception. Notre Dame has it and now so does PSU. I mean, criminy, at least "they" gave up on Nebby in a reasonable amount of time. It's friggin over.
