Louisiana and Texas pretty much control drilling in the gulf.
I was being a bit shortsighted by narrowing it down to just Oil and Gas.
after thinking it over and doing some research, these two states would also be able to control roughly half of all good entering and exiting all the countries formed by the current US mainland in someway.
9 of the top 15 (by tonnage per year) ports in the US are in either Texas or Louisiana.
and 14 of the top 20 are dependent upon the Mississippi River which would still be controlled by Texas/Louisiana.
Digging into a bit, this could be a really bloody dispute once everyone figures out how much each region depends on others in day to day life.
Can any of you from Ohio educate me on how valuable the Port of Cincinnati is to that area's economy?
Same question for the Port of Pittsburgh?
Those two ports are both in the top 50 in the US, and both are part of the Mississippi River system and would (in some way) be impacted by a different country controlling the big river.
Other major ports like Memphis, St. Louis, and Minneapolis/St. Paul would also be impacted being directly on the river.
