A hidden part of the capacity issue, at least at UPenn, is that in the spring they stopped all electives to accommodate the surge. This time, they know they can't afford to do that (financially) so COVID surge is competing with normal business of the hospital.

Might be anecdotal but if Penn is seeing it, so are others I would think.

And normal business is heading into the flu season as well, which can present it's own uptick/surge.

Hospitals around Akron are starting to cancel many elective surgeries. They are nearing capacity for critical care beds and more staff is not available due to them also coming down with Covid.

To put things in perspective in Southwest Ohio, UC Health has gone down to 50% elective inpatient surgeries, and Cincinnati Children's is taking trauma cases up to age 30 to relieve UC Health's strain. A couple area hospitals are not completely full for respirators; all the others have been and are.

My cousin is on a respirator in Columbus. A close friend on one here in Cape Town. We all know what we have to do to help ourselves and others have the best chance to survive this. Sad that no other country in the world has failed so badly at containing this as the United States. Something I never thought I'd see.
