We were taking bets at work today when we thought schools would reopen and my bet was January while others thought a "hybrid" start when academic year begins.

I totally disagree.
Although school district vary in their first-day-of-school, I think schools will start opening in September provided the case and death rates continue to fall. As we slowly start opening back up socially, we still have all of June, July, and August to "herd immunize".

What about immuno-compromised staff or their spouses, pregnant staff etc....?

That’s a difficult one. I would suspect that they would be covered under some sort of regulation related to FMLA? If schools are back in session, I guess that the districts could suggest that presence in the classroom is a bonafide occupational qualification... but I also have to guess that there’s no way in hell the teachers’ unions would stand for it.

Were it up to me, I’d allow them to stay at home until it blows over.
