Coronavirus (COVID-19) is too exciting for adults to discuss (CLOSED)

We've blown up our entire way of life for this nonsense.....

These are the COVID-19 mortality rates by age calculated by the Chinese CDC:

ages 10-19: 0.2%

ages 20-29: 0.2%

ages 30-39: 0.2%

ages 40-49: 0.4%

ages 50-59: 1.3%

ages 60-69: 3.6%

ages 70-79: 8%

80 and over: 14.8%

So your argument is that 13 deaths out of 1000 people in the age 50-59 cohort is normal and acceptable?

You do realize the numbers you've posted are all missing zeros in the tenths place in comparison to the flu?

The mortality rate for the flu in the 40-49 cohort is not 0.4%. It's 0.02%. So, by your own statistics, COVID-19 is 20-times more fatal in this group than than the flu.

You are literally saying that 1-in-6 people over 80 dying is no big deal, other than that it's an inconvenience to you.

Cool.

You do realize that the small region in Italy in which the virus is most prevalent has a high concentration of older people?

Who would otherwise not be in such potential danger if not for the introduction of a new pathogen to their country.

So... As long as it's the old foogies dying off, business as usual, eh?

And say nothing of infants, immuno-comprised individuals, cancer patients, HIV positive community, etc etc.

Look, I'm not saying panic. There is never a good time for that. But response and concern is warranted. If we go off initial data by effected countries who have shared the relavent info, at or just under a %1 mortality rate isn't beyond possible. As said here, worth taking into account viral duration, ease of transmission and projected infection rates.

For run lets say mortality rates are what South Korea initially projected around .5%
Take that with a 40% infection rate. Care to do the math on 144 million people...?

The spread, the infection rate... Those are the biggest problems.

Swine flu with a reported 61 million infected and 12k dead gave us a mortality rate of about .0002%. Obviously nobody really batted much of an eye about that. Again for fun, lets take that same 61 million, and move mortality rate over one more column at .002%.

If I told you mortality rate of corona is .002% you still probably wouldn't think much of it. But put that in your calculator to 61 million reported infected. All of a sudden, that one little column being moved doesn't seem so insignificant anymore, does it?

Cool.

H1N1 was far deadlier and we didn’t bat an eye. This is a total joke. All this does is make the rich, richer, and the poor, poorer. I’ll take my chances, because this common cold is the least of my worries.

If in a month or two (or maybe longer, I don't know) it looks like we overreacted, that means we actually did the right thing and didn't under react. Its really that simple.

It’s really not that simple if everyone in the lower and middle class are unemployed. Poverty is more dangerous than most illnesses. It effects generations. Notice that the rich men making these decisions are completely disconnected.

You need to step away from the keyboard. You're spouting nonsense and are showing little to no regard for an entire generation of our population.

That's a selfish fucking statement right there,

Not true at all. Quarantine the nursing homes for safety, not the entire population. Many productive solutions to save lives without collateral damage.

It's close here... high end party in Princeton... 47 attendees... 3 from PA found positive... 14 locals (9 so far have symptoms, awaiting results) .. which alarms me because almost zero chance one of those 9 don't use my gym... and one of those bastards probably uses my 10 lb pink barbells

Looks like the pups are gonna get some long walks... and I may have to see if I can still do pushups
