Problem is of course....the people with the shit hands through no fault of their own. And the ones that its partly their fault too, I don't know that we hate them, do we? And the ones in higher risk groups because they are older and can't afford a 10 year recovery are also more susceptible to the economy. This is the unfortunate reality. Over a long enough timeline, everyone will risk the same.

I think that's exactly the point. Everyone is risking something and everyone is vulnerable. To only acknowledge one set of vulnerabilities and risks is... well... pretty narrow minded.

Nobody wants to see anyone die. Nobody wants to see anyone lose their jobs and homes. Right now, those desires are, in many ways, at odds. Frankly, I'm not envious of anyone making these decisions right now because I certainly know that I don't have the answers.

Well to be fair, I didn't know I was talking to the smartest person on the internets.

You should be so blessed.

I'm kinda done with this topic with you. You have your opinion and I respect that. I've not seen evidence of a rational discussion with you on this point thus far -- as evidenced by your last reply. From my perspective, you're more than entitled to your opinion. We'll have to disagree on my right to have a differing one.

You need to pull your head out of your ass and stop implying that people who just want folks to live (or, fuck.....in my case just questioning the notion that being dead is better than being alive) are incapable of accepting other opinions. You're accusing people of being narrow minded while you walk around wearing Ted's SuperBowl Blockers. You can fuck off with your self righteous bullshit.

An overwhelmingly large percentage of the death toll does not include the groups you mention. I don’t know many ~80 year olds who still work, let alone in the health care industry. The comorbidity rates would also leave one to believe this isn’t taking a toll on either of those groups.
No, because we’ve flattened the curve...if we hadn’t have, or didn’t, then healthcare workers would be in much more serious jeopardy as a matter of course

Health care workers in specific areas of the hospital certainly have a higher risk of infection. Not debating that. But, you cited death toll. I just don’t see young healthy people even showing significant symptoms, let alone needing hospitalization, or being intubated as a last resort. I don’t believe a single person has died in this country that could/should have been saved based on lack of resources. If we have flattened the curve, as you state, then what are we waiting for? Did the scientists lie to us? We were told that once we flattened the curve, life would resume. This is why the civil unrest is looming. People feel they are being told a pack of lies and are becoming restless.

Admin action - please read before making more posts in this thread.

Hey all, Let's try to tone down the rhetoric somewhat.

Let's all realize that just because another poster has a position which is closer to 'we need to keep tougher mitigation efforts in place for a longer period of time', or 'we need to open up the economy at a faster pace' than your own position - doesn't mean that the poster has taken an extreme position on the opposite side of your opinion. And it doesn't mean that they deserve to be mocked or berated or called a name.

Yeah, like everybody else, I'm pissed off at this pandemic and what's it's done to the public health and what the reaction to it has done to the economy, and will continue to do in both situations.

And I'm tired of being stuck at home. But right now I'm more tired of reading this thread because people seem to be taking out some of their frustrations on each other.

So discuss the issues and present your opinions reasonably, and respect the opinions of others. Or I'll just assume you're a Vulvarine troll and act accordingly.

Not for an epidemiologist. This branch of science exists for reasons, one of which being it's more reliable than message board opinions of people who haven't studied it.
How "much more serious jeopardy as a matter of course" would a nurse or doctor be if they treated 20 COVID-positive patients instead of 10? The only, only thing that "flattening the curve" has appeared to have done is to avoid inundating emergency rooms.

Less PPE available, more overwhelmed hospital systems, less ventilators, more people dying of other things that can’t be treated as well, nosocomial COVID infections...
