Coronavirus (COVID-19) is too exciting for adults to discuss (CLOSED)

So the UPenn hospital is starting to pick up. Seems like it is about 2 weeks behind NYC.

Before the media starts to sensationalize it; 2 cases are adults in their 30's/40's
  • both are morbidly obese (over 500lbs)
  • heart conditions
  • diabetic
  • and sundry other issues that go along with being a profoundly unhealthy 30-40 something
I am interested to see if these find their way into the "see it's not just old people" narrative.

Up to this point, however, the staff's days have been filled with ruling out 100% of the people who have shown up. They are ready for the surge and it's most likely coming.

As others have said, testing is the key. If we could test well enough we wouldn't have to nuke the economy to save lives. Trying to fight while blind pretty much ensures we end up doing more damage than necessary to the economy and saving fewer lives than possible.

So, they aren't going to clawback the check you get, even if your 2020 income would otherwise preclude you.

So I've got a guy who made $135,000 in 2018 and $210,000 in 2019 now sitting on filing his tax returns so he'll get the check, knowing that he doesn't qualify. For fucks' sake -- you made $200,000 last year, how the fuck are you this desperate for $3,000?!?!

I'm not sitting on my returns for this but my accountant was slow before all this bullshit so they are just sitting.

I'll just donate it to the local foodbank or something. Simplest solution I can think of.

I am extremely fortunate to not need the stimulus money but if/when my check comes it will be put to use buying gift cards/food/other items from small business in the area and if possible large tips for the workers were possible

Thanks, Jwins. I am amazed at what I read here. Who has not been telling Americans the truth about this pandemic is very clear to see. You have video, for goodness sake.

The problem in the United States is not hospital beds. It is hospital beds in wards that can be isolated and especially in intensive care units (ICU).

In South Africa, we have been in a voluntary isolation period for three weeks. Tomorrow begins a 21-day lockdown. You cannot leave your home except to go directly to a food retailer or healthcare professional. You must carry government identification and proof of address. Since you are coming from home, the police (or army) will be able to check if you are on a direct route. If you are suspected of having coronavirus, you will be taken to quarantine immediately and stay there until you test negatively. Given the load, that could be a 7-day wait. The problems are worse if you clearly are not on a reasonable path between your home and the approved destination, or back. Up to 6 months in jail.

Everything is going to come to a halt for three weeks, except the most essential of services needed to combat COVID-19. We cannot go for a jog or walk on the streets. We may not walk the dog. Alcoholic beverages and cigarettes may not be sold. Supermarkets may not sell anything but foodstuffs and health-related goods. The South African government intends to get on top of this right now and NO ONE is complaining.

South Africa has not had a COVID-19 death yet, and no one is in an ICU. The only reason we have it is because of a tour to Italy that brought it back.

Most people who get this will have a moderate illness but about 1 in 5 people over 55 or so will experience worse and possibly life-threatening illness.

If this map doesn't scare the living hell out of you, then you are not applying your mind to the problem. You could have more than 500,000 COVID-19 cases by the time Easter rolls around and as many as 1,000 die that day. Please guys, take care of yourselves.

Steve, I read a Chicago Tribune article that said a 43-year-old Jo'burg man attended a party in Connecticut on March 5th, and fell ill on his plane ride home a couple of days later. So it may not have been just the folks on the tour of Italy that brought the virus to South Africa.

I wish that the US had enacted the measures you described on a nationwide basis 10-to-14 days ago. I believe that stricter measures will be much more effective overall, the piecemeal approach here can end up being a losing game of whack-a-mole.

I would've donated mine as others here have stated but I already filed my taxes and I'm not going to get anything. Your client seems like an asshole, by the way.

Ideally, you'd adjust taxes on someone like this in the future to get the money back. that way you get the money to people who need it asap and can recoup some of it from rich people later. Unfortunately this bill won't do much to help most people who really need it.

Right? He's generally a good guy, so it's weird to see him being like this. I guess just a reminder that entitlement isn't exclusive to the lower class?

Agreed. That's why taking away the ability to make people repay it is shitty. I get that people would be pissed if they had to repay some/all of it next year, but damnit, if you are repaying it, maybe you shouldn't have needed it in the first place?

Because the rebuttal is assuming the devastation is not as dramatic or worse. We don't know that. It could be. We are already seeing systems get overwhelmed, and we're still pretending it isn't a national problem.
Only the gloomiest of models are predicting a death toll anywhere near a point to where having the Second Great Depression would be an acceptable alternative.

Ohhhhh, probably going to border on something for the poli thread... but if the Kennedy Center is going to get a check, I'm not going to bat an eye at anyone in the six-figure income groups who receive one as well. While I'm sure that his accountant, or picnic table loving tax prep professional as it were, is doing what he can to minimize this individual's tax burden... I also have to guess that this person is receiving dimes on the dollar return for his mandatory annual investment in his country.
