Connecticut School Shooting

My oldest just finished his 1st semester at OSU. My youngest is in 10th grade. In February, 3 high school students in Chardon, Ohio, a town about 10 miles from us, were killed by a classmate who shot them in school, in the cafeteria. Having sons in that same age group, and that tragedy being close to home, had it hit closer to me than maybe it would others.

Today's news hit me much, much harder than what happened earlier in the year at Chardon even though I don't have children in that age group. But I do have children and as such, I cannot imagine what those parents, grandparents, and siblings are going through right now. I sat on my couch earlier watching the story unfold. I thought I would get the story, shake my head at what is wrong with people, and continue on with my day. That didn't happen as this story is so powerfully sad, so tragic, so emotional. I watched much longer than I thought I would. And I wept.

I have no idea how the president made it through that short speech. No way I could have.

I have seen some reporters get choked up trying to give a report. I have heard that many reporters off camera are being affected by this. Saw the state police officer in charge in Newtown say that the first responders are also receiving counseling due to the horrific nature of what they have seen....a teacher and her entire kindergarten class have been killed....

Not to diminish the other attacks that have happened in this country since 1999 (sadly too many to rattle off), but this one seems like it may have hit the country a little harder than others....it seems that collectively we have been rocked to the core.

My thoughts are with the families of all of the victims in Newtown.

thoughts and prayers are definitely with the families of the victims.

even though this was clean across the country from me, it hit really close to home.

My wife works as a teacher's aid at our local elementary school. Kindergarten is the class she's in for 3/4 of the day.
My youngest son is a student at that school as well.

When I 1st heard about it this morning, my heart sunk.
you never think something like this would ever happen to kids so young.
I know the thought had never crossed my mind that my kids (or any kids for that matter) would ever be unsafe at an elementary school.

my god give the families, witnesses, and survivors the strength to make it through this.

I mean - kindergarteners. Kindergarteners for [censored]'s sake.

I can't wait to pick up my girl from preschool today. I'm leaving early.

Did the same thing today.

That and my girls always runs to me and gives me a hug when I arrive to pick her up and I hugged her extra hard and long today and the 2 teachers in the room commented on the hug and said I had to today, and then realized they were unaware of what had happened and had to tell them what had happened, which was not fun.

There are only a couple times I can remember being actually shaken by news. I usually hear a bad story and get a bad feeling for a minute or so, shake my head and move on. This one and 9/11 are two exceptions. I have a similar feeling today that I had on that day. It's tragic, sad, and upsetting. I feel for the children who were killed, the children who were fortunate enough to survive, the families of all involved, and the community. Everyone is going to ask "why?" There is not an answer. This guy wanted publicity and he got it. He's a coward. Hell is too good a place for him.

I think this one will hurt more...and for longer...because of the circumstances. What I mean is that this is not some high school student who was bullied and took it out on his fellow classmates, horrible as that is when this happens...this was an adult who shot up a schoolroom full of wide-eyed young children under the age of 10. There is no way, zero way, to wrap you hands around that. None. That is what will make this one stand out forever.

Absolutely. The main reason why I said it was as if we have collectively been rocked to the core. I tend to think that this unimaginable tragedy will open up some serious, and hopefully adult, conversation on many topics.

Well, so far you're the only person I've seen bring that up. Everyone else was more concerned with the victims. Where he got quotes doesn't rank too high up on the priority list today, I'd imagine.

why the fuck are people so fascinated with shooting up a school in this country (I don't mean us as viewers, I mean people who do it)

because they know that they will face little to no resistance, so they will be totally in control of the situation and everyone's lives will be in their hands as well as all eyes will be on them while they are proving their fucked up point.

Am I the only one that thought that the news organizations interviewing children in the parking lot was fucking disgusting?

I lost what little bit of faith that any of the news organizations were anything but gluttonous vermin fighting each other for the meager scraps of viewership that they could consume for a boost in ratings, advertising revenue and relevance to the mind numbed and brain dead public. The is no such thing as journalistic integrity anymore.

Not to post something that probably belongs in the political forums, but if THIS isn't enough to enrage this country and take a long hard look at some of our laws, I don't know what will.
That's all I have to say about that.

We have more gun laws than ever and the majority of gun crimes are committed by illegally acquired firearms. I realize an event like this stirs emotions but there are more people killed every weekend in Chicago with illegal guns. They just don't happen in a 5 minute span, draw "breaking news" coverage, and a speech from the President. Another law isn't going to stop that, either.

Now if one of the leaders at the school had been trained and allowed to possess a firearm, maybe this twisted SOB gets taken down before he kills 20 kids? Those gun laws can cut both ways.

Just a sad day in our history. If you have a beef with your parents that's one thing, but playing target practice with little kids? :shake:

Nope, you're not the only one. "If it bleeds it leads", even if we have to exploit children in the process.
