Comparing TX/OSU '02 Classes

These writeups all need to be compiled into a front page feature once the week of the 10th rolls around... then we can link to the OSU & Texas (jcdenton) video highlights, breakdown the game, the recruiting classes, mascots, even NCAA Football 2006 simulations.

Great thread! As I recall, the Texas 2002 recruiting class was by far and away the Nation's #1. Mack signed about 12 OL & DL prospects that year, all 4* and 5*. OSU was by far and away the Nation's #2 class, and had a more rounded classes. Wondered who would play and be a 4th year senior, and who would shirt and be a junior for the two game tussle. Thanks to Orangeblood who took care of the 'no longer involved' players, but would like a more in depth look see at who is playing well as a senior, and now playing as a junior. Pretty much know who we have on the field.

It'll be a real good match-up of recruiting classes, with OSU taking the first this year, but losing next year, as it appears that we played more of the 02 recruits early than Texas did. Maybe the home court advantage helps, but for OSU, we haven't approached the lofty recruiting heights since. Done well, but not as many 5*'s. And who would know that the least of the LB recruits would blossom out to be the best??????
I agree, this is a great thread, especially with the game fast approaching. I take some issue with your "Texas 2002 recruiting class was by far and away the Nation's #1" I would call that a stretch. Texas' problem with that class, and I'm talking about at that time, was too many of the same position, whereas OSU filled an entire roster.

A discussion of who stayed with the proggy and etc. may reveal eitehr Tex or OSU "by far" #1 or #2, but those classes, on LOI day, were close. Due to OSU's taking more positions, I'd have rated them #1 and Texas 2. Not to say Tex. didn't get a great class, just that OSU's was slightly better (again, on LOI Day)

What Cleve, 459, and phatdaddy said. All three deserve the "great post" award. Hawk and Holmes are the clear-cut stars of this class. I tend to laugh out loud any more over people crying in their beer over losing a "5-star" that they've never see play a down of football. The keys to me in recruiting are finding those "3-stars" that may not have the height, weight, speed, or strength to impress as D-I superstars "on paper." They just seem to play football better than anyone else they play against.

It's all subjective fella's, remember that. Kinda like a buddy of yours setting you up on a blind date with a "really nice girl with a great personality" and then having Carmen Elektra show up at your door.

to further enhance the point of recruiting rankings being anything but science, look to the west and consider a certain 5* recruit who left tOSU at the alter, so to speak, and decided to attend USC... i'm not sure he has even seen the field other than Special Teams, if at all...

I'm pretty sure Jim Tressel would love to have Fred Davis playing TE right now. I know I'd love to have another experienced guy there right now.

At the time of his recruitment, ol' Fred saw himself as the next great pass catcher at SC. He was a receiver, not a blocker. Then, he got to L.A. and found out that they had some other great receivers as well. So, he saw the light and became a TE, where he's got a shot to play a lot this year. My guess is that Tressel will get by with what we have available at TE this year.
