Comparing TX/OSU '02 Classes

Orangeblood

HornFan Against Holbrook
Most of the nonconference games we play are pushovers so it's nice to finally get to research a quality OOC opponent. I was looking at some of your classes over the last few years and noticed that you had a monster recruiting year in '02.... which would be your seniors this year (barring redshirts). We had a solid class that year as well but some of those players aren't with us anymore.

So I was wondering.. which one of your guys on the '02 class panned out well and we'll see them on the field in September? For the Horn's, 5 star recruits Marquis Johnson, Brian Pickryl and Edorian McCullough are no longer on the team due to grades or injuries. 4 star recruits Albert Hardy, Mike Williams (maybe) and Garnet Smith won't be making the trip to Columbus either. The rest of the guys are playing and most of them MAJOR contributors.

I suppose I could just look at your current roster, but I'm lazy. Thoughts?

Thanks to 3yards for getting the images up.

I would expect that we'll have 6 statrers on offense, and 7 on defense, from that class of 2002.

The only guys no longer on the team are EJ Underwood and the Clarett kid, who was a quiet kid that nobody ever paid any attention to. I'm not sure whatever happened to him. :wink2:

Sims, Mangold, Downing, and Datish are all OL starters. Sims and Mangold have played since back in the 2002 NC game against Miami.

Holmes starts at WR, Hall was a starter last year but lost the spot to Ginn.

Smith beat out Zwick for starting Qb at the end of last season, but will miss our opener and then probably start against the 'Horns.

Hawk and Carpenter return as starters at LB, D'Andrea has had injury problems and now backs up the MLB spot held by Air Force transfer and Texas native Anthony Schlegel.

Kudla and Pitcock are returning DL starters, Richardson should start at DE this year.
Salley and Everett will be returning starters in the secondary.

White and Coleman have never found spots and are backup tight ends, but White's an H-back type and Coleman spent some time on the OL.

Mitchell (safety) and Penton (DL) play as second-teamers. Schafer has gone over to the OL, and spent most of last year as a backup. Roberts has been a career backup in the secondary.

BTW, if you could give me a hint on how to get these pictures to actually show on the post instead of just the links, it'd be helpful. Thanks.

You could either use the image button at the top of the area where you type your post, or just type "

Texas 02 vs OSU 02 - recruiting ratings

Great thread! As I recall, the Texas 2002 recruiting class was by far and away the Nation's #1. Mack signed about 12 OL & DL prospects that year, all 4* and 5*. OSU was by far and away the Nation's #2 class, and had a more rounded classes. Wondered who would play and be a 4th year senior, and who would shirt and be a junior for the two game tussle. Thanks to Orangeblood who took care of the 'no longer involved' players, but would like a more in depth look see at who is playing well as a senior, and now playing as a junior. Pretty much know who we have on the field.

It'll be a real good match-up of recruiting classes, with OSU taking the first this year, but losing next year, as it appears that we played more of the 02 recruits early than Texas did. Maybe the home court advantage helps, but for OSU, we haven't approached the lofty recruiting heights since. Done well, but not as many 5*'s. And who would know that the least of the LB recruits would blossom out to be the best??????

Orangeblood, for the images to show up, they need to be hosted on a web site somewhere like PhotoBucket (which is where I loaded your images and linked to them using the {img} & {/img} codes). You can also "upload" graphics to BuckeyePlanet (as you did with those images), but I believe that Clarity has turned OFF the automatic display of those images to save some stress on our server. That is why you are seeing "links" to the graphics.

PS Obviously the vBulletin "codes" need to use "[" and "]" as a prefix and suffix ... NOT the "{" and "}" that I used in my example above.

Cali... here ya go...

***** Justin Blalock RT - has lived up to the hype and is a big key to our offensive line. All Big XII. Red shirted his freshman year because of depth at the position. Currently 6'4" 329 and has great footwork.

***** Rodrique Wright DT - one of our best weapons on defense and thought by many to be one of the best DT's in the country. All Big XII. Decided to skip the draft and return for his senior year. Currently 6'5" 305 and has great explosion off the line. He's a difference maker and it will be fun to see him go up against your talented O-Line.

***** Vince Young QB - the guy amazes me every time I watch him play. Granted, he's had his ups and downs... but alot of people forget that last season was his first full year as the signal caller. Most interesting stat is he's 17-2 as a starter.

**** Larry Dibbles DT - Preseason First Team All Big XII and is a perfect compliment to Rod Wright. Mainly served as a backup his first two years due to future NFL DT's playing in his position, but he's came out firing last year. He's definitely lived up to his four star status and some even say he'll be a better pro than Wright.

**** Aaron Harris LB - One of the most underrated players on our team. He's a playmaker who's fast enough to get to the quarterback and make plays in the backfield and we'll look to him to anchor our linebacking core. Main reason he's been over looked is because Derrick Johnson was the leader on D last season. Pre-Season All Conference. 6'0" 235lbs

**** Kasey Studdard LG - Started all 12 games last year and was honorable mention all Big XII. He's a key part of our line. He's a guy that you love having down in the trenches.. he's got a nasty attitude (in a good way). He also redshirted and will be a JR this year.

**** David Thomas TE - If there's one receiver your guys will have to keep in check, it might be Thomas. He's a good blocking tight end but he might be the best recieving tight end in the country. The kid's got great hands and is fast enough to get away from linebackers. Caught 5 TD's last year and was Vince's favorite target. First team all Big XII and John Mackey Award candidate last season.

**** Selving Young RB - After a dissapointing season ending injury against Arkansas last season, Selvin will more than likely take over duties at running back now that he's healthy. He's an explosive runner that also specializes in punt returns. He'll face some tough competition during two-a-days from our young running backs though. In 2003 he averaged over 24 yards per kick off return. If he can avoid injury.. he might be a break out performer for us this year.

**** Aaron Ross DB - Solid DB who is battling it out for a starting position at corner where we're stacked with talent. He made an immediate impact his freshman season and also returned kicks for us last year after Selvin went down. Very fast and he loves to hit. 6'1" 189lbs

*** Brian Robison DE - Played as LB in 2003 but had to convert to DE because of depth issues after Mike Williams was declared inelligible. Was on a learning curve last year but is a stud athlete (also an All Big XII performer in shot put and discus) who showed tremendous improvement throughout the year. Will start on the right side and earned honorable mention all Big XII honors last year. 6'3" 267 lbs

Those are the main contributors that we've got. 10 starters, 5 offensive and 5 defensive. Obviously... the few 5 star and 4 star recruits that we lost would be nice to have back, but overall I think they've done great as a class. Hope this helped.

exactly Clevebucks, just goes toshow you stars dont mean shit... I mean sure you could have a great hs career and translate that at the d1 level w/5 stars which is great like ad peterson at OU, our own TG2 or like Mo Clarett but jsut cuz u may be a three star doesnt mean anything--Hawk willl go down as one of the best OSU linebackers of all time and Santonio will be a sure first rounder and a huge playmaker at the next level

and three stars is average to pretty good

but then again, look where they came from

Belle Glade and Centerville

i think those places know a little somthin somthin about the game of football....

LordJeff.... awesome. Thanks. Sorry if this has been posted before... I'm new to the board. Still good discussion though since the two best recruiting classes will finally meet up.
Actually, we were hoping to get a Texas perspective on this issue - if you are interested in writing a "front page" article concerning this, please send me a PM.
