Lightning Review: Avatar on DVD
Is there a more depressing product on our nation's shelves than the the non-3D Blu-ray of James Cameron's dragon sex fantasy cartoon? Just one: Avatar on DVD.
Things you might not have noticed through all the awesome floating 3D plants, and 3D dragons, and 3D battle scenes, and 3D Na'vi breasts:

This is a movie about a cartoonish villain killing blue cat furries to harvest something called "Unobtanium"

This is a movie about a man who rapes a dragon until it loves him, then immediately abandons that dragon for a better dragon

...

This movie has the line, "You are Omaticaya now. You may make your bow from the wood of Hometree. And you may choose a woman. We have many fine women. Ninat is the best singer."

...

Save your cash, turn your TV's color balance to MAXIMUM BLUE and just watch an old VHS of Fern Gully.

$1 Billion for special effects & not a dime for an original script.

If that's your beef with it, fine, but most people don't want to watch it because of "blue cat people." The majority of people I know who won't watch it don't even know what it's about, other than the cat people. And that's enough for them.

The movie is something to see. Original story? No, but it's still something to see.

As a technology demonstrator...sure.

As a great film...not so much.

Don't get me wrong I enjoyed watching Avatar well enough but a lot of the over the top praise it's garnered (not to mention the bizarre behavior it seems to have ignited in some) is just ridiculous.
