Arena football
Linebackers' freedom could reduce scoring

Friday, February 29, 2008 3:13 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Tremaine Neal feels unleashed.
"It's like letting a dog out of his cage," said Neal, a Destroyers linebacker.
The Arena Football League, always dominated by offense, made a rules change in the offseason that could have a dramatic effect on scoring.
No longer will Neal and other "jack" linebackers have to stay confined during pass coverage to an imaginary box that left them feeling like spectators.
Now, the jack linebacker can roam from sideline to sideline, though he must remain within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage unless a quarterback pump-fakes.

I gotta say I love this rule change. It was always frustrating to watch columbus make a good defensive play only to have it waved off because a lb went out of his "box".

Arena football
Destroyers retool in search of energy

Sunday, March 2, 2008 3:24 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Even when the Destroyers were making their run to the ArenaBowl, coach Doug Kay knew change would be needed.
The stunning playoff victories were sweet, but you don't coach for five decades without understanding that a few good games don't erase the deficiencies that had long been obvious during a 7-9 regular season.
So Kay resisted any temptation he might have had to bring back most of his National Conference championship team for the 2008 Arena Football League season.

Football in Cleveland rules; anytime, anyplace, anyhow, says The Plain Dealer's Terry Pluto

Tuesday, March 04, 2008

You know Cleveland is a foot ball town when it's March 3 and there are 17,391 at Quicken Loans Arena on their feet, clapping, screaming and barking for two linemen!
The fans nearly blew off the roof when Browns left tackle Joe Thomas and defensive lineman Shaun Smith were introduced before the first Arena Football League game in Cleveland Gladiators history.
Then Bernie Kosar walked to midfield to a chorus of "Ber-Nee," "Ber-Nee" and a few chants of "Steelers stink," only they didn't say "stink."
@StoryAd
Kosar is the Gladiators' man of many titles: minority owner, president, CEO, recruiter of star quarterback Ray Philyaw -- and, by his own admission, a bit of a meddler drawing up plays for the coaches.
While the Gladiators wear red and black, the fans still bleed orange and brown. Kosar is perhaps the most beloved player in Browns history, at least for this generation.
And the heartbeat of Northeast Ohio is football.
There were 17,391 of them in the seats Monday night, watching the Gladiators beat the New York Dragons, 61-49.
Really, 17,391. Don't know how many tickets were free or bargain-priced, but they came, all 17,391. When Philyaw fired a 37-yard touchdown pass to Andy McCullough on the first play from scrimmage in Cleveland Gladiators history, many of them were in love.

Cleveland Gladiators beat New York Dragons in debut

Gladiators dump Dragons before lively crowd of football-hungry fans
Tuesday, March 04, 2008Dennis Manoloff
Plain Dealer Reporter
Gladiators President Bernie Kosar said at the outset of training camp that he expects his club to contend for the Arena Football League playoffs.
It was a bold statement given the franchise's 2-14 record last season in Las Vegas.
Kosar based his optimism largely on the acquisition of veteran quarterback Raymond Philyaw, who signed as a free agent from Kansas City after a relentless pursuit by Kosar.
@StoryAd
Philyaw made his boss look very smart Monday night at The Q. Philyaw completed 18 of 23 passes for 240 yards and five touchdowns as the Gladiators defeated the New York Dragons, 61-49.
A crowd of 17,391, energetic from the start, watched the first arena game in the Cleveland area since the Thunderbolts of the early 1990s.
"The atmosphere was awesome," said receiver/ defensive back Robert Redd, a Bowling Green State University product. "It was great to see so many people supporting us. We fed off them.
Every time we needed a boost, they were there for us."

New game at the 'Q': Arena football comes to Cleveland
Destroyers have successful debut, but will it last?
Thursday, March 6, 2008
BY Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

Bernie Kosar is the face of the Cleveland Gladiators, the transplanted Arena Football League team that wasn't happening in Las Vegas and didn't stay.

It's showtime in Ohio, and eventually the face will have to be somebody who still plays.

It worked Monday in the franchise's Cleveland debut. The Gladiators defeated the New York Dragons, 61-49. The first thing mentioned on the team Web site's game story was the crowd ? 17,391.

It remains to be seen if this region's sports fans will shell out to watch players who might not ring even a faint bell on "Stump the Schwab."

Gladiator football isn't as cheap as the movies. It can be as expensive as the Browns. The better single-game seats at Quicken Loans Arena are $55 and $70. The worst of the nosebleeds are $13.

Arena football
Destroyers hoping to rebound in Dallas

Friday, March 7, 2008 3:02 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
So what will it be, Little Big Horn II or the Great Escape II? Today, the Destroyers play at the Dallas Desperados in week two of the Arena Football League season. A year ago, their games at Dallas marked the two extremes of the Destroyers' crazy season.
Last April, the Destroyers blew a 37-7 lead and fell 53-51 to the Desperados. Afterward, Columbus coach Doug Kay said watching tape of that game made him feel the way Custer would have if Little Big Horn had been filmed.
But Columbus got its revenge in the playoffs, stunning Dallas 66-59 in the second round. Considering that the Destroyers had limped into the playoffs with a 7-9 record while Dallas was 15-1, the upset was considered the biggest in AFL playoff history.

Cleveland Gladiators hold on to defeat Utah Blaze, 66-63

Monday, March 10, 2008Dennis Manoloff
Plain Dealer Reporter
It did not take long for the Gladiators to match their victory total of last season.
Raymond Philyaw threw for 297 yards and six touchdowns as the Gladiators moved to 2-0 with a 66-63 defeat of Utah at The Q.
The franchise went 2-14 in its final year in Las Vegas.
@StoryAd
"We came to Cleveland to build a team here and have really no association with the past," Gladiators coach Mike Wilpolt said, "so we don't talk about last year any longer. But to get two wins in our first two games is big."
The Gladiators opened with a 61-49 conquest of New York on March 3 at The Q.
"I'd hate to say we expected to be 2-0, but in the back of our minds we thought we'd have a chance," Wilpolt said. "And it's important that we defended our house. We want everyone in this league to know that The Q is going to be a tough place to play."

Cleveland Gladiators get a boost from receiver/defender Robert Redd

Wednesday, March 12, 2008Dennis Manoloff
Plain Dealer Reporter
On the fourth play from scrimmage Sunday afternoon, Utah Blaze receiver Aaron Boone made the Gladiators' Robert Redd look bad.
After catching a pass from Joe Germaine, Boone used a terrific fake to lose Redd before cruising in for a 14-yard touchdown.
"I had an easy tackle and I didn't make it," Redd said.
@StoryAd
Instead of sulking, Redd used the play as motivation.
"It fired me up, no doubt," he said.
Redd turned the Blaze's short-term gain into long-term pain. In addition to playing defensive back, he caught seven passes for a career-best 105 yards and three touchdowns in a 66-63 victory at The Q.

Kosar: Gladiators will fly in Cleveland
Former Browns star says timing, product are right
Wednesday, March 12, 2008 6:41 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
CLEVELAND -- Can arena football thrive in a city made famous by Paul Brown and Otto Graham, as well as the 62-year history of the Cleveland Browns? Bernie Kosar believes it will.
The former Browns quarterback is the driving force behind the Cleveland Gladiators, the newest addition to the Arena Football League. The team continues its inaugural season Saturday against the Destroyers.
Kosar, president of football operations and part owner, helped bring the Las Vegas arena team to Cleveland this year. The Gladiators play in Quicken Loans Arena, home of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Gladiators draw good crowds early 32,696 fans show up for first 2 games. Local sponsorships also key
By George M. Thomas
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Friday, Mar 14, 2008
CLEVELAND: The Gladiators spent five seasons in the desert that is Las Vegas prospecting for success. It appears that the Arena Football League team might have struck gold in its new home on the shores of Lake Erie.
Two home games might not be enough to measure the success of the area's newest professional sports team, but there are signs that the Gladiators might have found the success that eluded them in Nevada.
The Gladiators drew just 43,064 fans in 2007 to the Orleans Arena in Vegas for a paltry average of 5,383 fans. In two games at Quicken Loans Arena, the Gladiators have already attracted 32,696 fans for a whopping 16,348 average.

Arena football Destroyers
Defensive stats deceptively good

Friday, March 21, 2008 2:57 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The numbers say the Destroyers defense is playing decently.
Heading into their game tonight at the Utah Blaze, the Destroyers rank eighth in the 18-team Arena Football League in scoring defense, yielding 51.7 points per game. Their pass defense has given up the second-fewest yards in the league.
But the numbers are deceiving.
AFL defenses don't show their worth by yards surrendered. Points allowed is also a misleading gauge because that depends largely on the number of possessions in a game.
