Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

Sources: Darlington Nagbe trying to force a trade to Columbus Crew SC

A possible surprising conclusion to one of preseason’s biggest mysteries.

The mystery surrounding Darlington Nagbe’s absence from Atlanta United’s first two preseason friendlies could have a dramatic conclusion.

Multiple sources with knowledge of the situation have confirmed to Dirty South Soccerthat the veteran midfielder wants out to be traded to Columbus Crew SC.

Why the Crew specifically? One main reason is Caleb Porter. The new manager in Columbus has an extremely close relationship with Nagbe. Porter managed Nagbe at both Akron University and with the Portland Timbers. Another possible reason could be that Columbus is near Nagbe’s hometown of Lakewood, Ohio.

Massive Report’s Crew Mount Rushmore

What four players should be etched into Crew immortality?

Brian McBride
The Crew’s first ever draft pick and USMNT superstar. McBride’s ability on the field and willingness to shoulder the brunt of the team’s marketing efforts during the early days were essential for the club to gain stability in the market. He is/was a class act on and off the field and recently returned to play in the Save The Crew match with other former players near MAPFRE Stadium.

Guillermo Barros Schelotto
He lacked the longevity of the other players on this list, as GBS came to Columbus at the twilight of his career, but his achievements were second to none. He enhanced the teammates around him and made the small market club a big time winner.

Federico Higuain
Entering his eighth season in Columbus, Higuain continues to be the Crew’s engine on the field and its figurehead off of it. He is a phenom on dead balls and can create as well as score within the run of play. He may even take over the regular season goal scoring title from Jeff Cunningham by this seasons end.

Frankie Hejduk
Frankie is the team’s brand ambassador today and rightfully so. He was a star on the field with his energetic play and leadership capabilities. A member and team captain of the MLS Cup championship team, Frankie is a high-spirited and energetic person. Those traits were palpable watching him bomb up and down the wing, and continue to be in his current team role today.

Fox Sports Ohio to become Crew’s new multi-year broadcast partner

The Black & Gold have a new television home.

Columbus Crew SC is returning to Fox Sports Ohio after spending the last five years with Spectrum Sports, according to Tom Reed of The Athletic. Massive Report can confirm Reed’s report. The move back to Fox Sports Ohio will be a joy to fans who were unable to view the matches in previous years due to blackout restriction in a certain radius of Columbus.

The deal is expected to be a multi-year deal and will includes a 30-minute pre-game and post-game show, according to The Athletic. This will also give those from the Cleveland area — where owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam own the Cleveland Browns — will be granted exposure to the Black & Gold.

The last Columbus Crew televised on the Fox Sports Ohio network was in 2013, before previous ownership made the jump to Time Warner Sports, which changed to Spectrum Sports in 2016.

The deal did not set well with fans. Within a 75-mile radius from MAPFRE Stadium, those who were subscribed to either DirectTV, MLS Live or MLS Direct Kick were unable to watch the team. It also became such a hassle for bars and pubs who weren’t able to host watch parties due to the black out.

Man, took a look at the schedule and there's only 1 game on a national network. Clearly the league is not happy that the team is still alive.

When I was sitting in the stands Saturday I was thinking it would be comical if MLS scheduled Columbus as the only cold-weather city with a home game the opening weekend. Then I saw Colorado and other cold-weather cities also played at home (Colorado had the coldest game in MLS history).

I liked the fact that Dee Haslam and Dr. Pete walked the stadium hours before the match to make sure everything was set up right. Shows they at least care.

The minor changes such as the smoke machines behind the goals and stadium signage were noticeable and detailed-oriented.
