Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

Electric! NO WAY a D Back should be able to do what Afful did in extra time ... AMAZING! 1-2-3-4-keeper ... GOOOOOOOAL!
Goals from the RB and CDM in the same game. Artur’s Was his first with the club. Just an absolutely perfect game all around.

I’ll be surprised if Steffen doesn’t draw some interest from European teams after the season. He’s a damn good GK, by far one of the best, most well composed GK’s in Crew history.

Well not sure the away goal from NYC helps the "perfect" game hypothesis, but considering the circumstances it was about as good as anyone could have hoped for ... on multiple fronts (not just the score). I fear Steffen is not long for the MLS, but I also fear the Crew is not long for Columbus. He will certainly be getting time with the national team I would imagine. Must say he is very poised for a 22 year old. Arthur (and Trapp for that matter) have really been bringing their hardhats and lunch boxes to work protecting the back line and starting the counters. Happy he got his goal. Gotta say I was frustrated with his turnovers in this game, but everyone seemed to have at least 1 or 2 head scratching moments giving the ball back to NYC. Hoping it was just a function of adrenaline/emotion of what's at stake ... not just from their professional perspective of being in the playoffs, but also the added pressure of the circus going on about them. Overall it seems to be rallying them. So much to be excited about in the last 2 games ... then the reality of Precourt wanting to move. Like the Bucks, they are on a hell of a roll and I intend to enjoy it as long as possible. :-)

Yeah, Artur was a little frustrating in the midfield at times. I think a lot of that has to do with NYC’s midfield attempting to stymie Pipa from facilitating in the midfield. Artur’s best play this season has been linking up with Trapp and Pipa up the middle. When he doesn’t have that middle option, he seems to panic a bit. Really thought Meram and Pedro played well. Pedro’s performance was his best game with the Crew, IMO.

Also really impressed with how well Jonathan Mensah and Josh Williams have played together. Thought Josh would struggle at times, but he’s having his best season statistically of his career.

Yes, clearly Pedro's best game. Worked his butt off to link up, then extend attacks. Little worried as he pulled up after one particularly long/hard run to get involved. Was holding his side and then took a hands-to-knees breather for a bit instead of working back. Wasn't quite as involved after that point. Hoping it isn't anything lasting.

Meram was my frustrating player in the ATL game. Had a lot of uncharacteristic turn overs in that one. Missed a goal that he normally finishes easily in this game. Guess he has a foot injury that would explain the give-aways vs ATL and the miss vs NYC. Overall was MUCH better in this match and went the whole match if I recall correctly. That's a good sign. Still kinda wondering what Meram said or did to Callens that made him throw the elbow. I can't imagine it happened for no reason. SUPER risky to pull that right in front of the center on a set piece. Guy is literally looking right at you. Anyway I'm hoping his red card and not being able to play in the second leg negates any "juice" they got from the away goal.

Mensah and Williams have done well. Especially love William's emotional/heart-and-soul kinda leadership on the field. Just a tough nut to crack for opponents. Arthur/Trapp in front of Mensah/Williams in front of Steffan is a lot to work thru centrally for an attacker.

Just a drive by fuck their away goal...NYCFC are mental midgets...bottle up Villa, they will fold like Aggie playing UCLA

Ha, hope they continue to have metal issues. In hindsight Vieira probably should have played for the 1-0 loss after the red card but kept pushing forward inspite of being down a player. Maybe he's the real issue? Bottle up Villa? Easier said than done. Dude still looks as aggressive and hungry as he ever did and his skill has never been an issue.

Still it's a team game and it looks like the Crew have NYC in a tough spot. They will have to play for at least 3 goals and that plays into Berhalter's style. One away goal for us is all it SHOULD take. We shall see.

Friedel was great, don’t get me wrong. But Zach stepped in after a battle for the starting job in the offseason and a lot of people didn’t know what to expect. Now we’re one game away from a showdown with Toronto for the Eastern Conference crown. He struggled at times, early on. But when it meant the most, he put it all on the line. Same goes for Williams, really. Sauro’s injury wasn’t a good sign for the team, and Williams stepped back in like he never missed a beat. Really proud of what he’s been able to do since returning to CCSC.
