Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

Tyson fucking Wahl.... Hardly a CB, yet he's found a starting role with Columbus. More undersized than Parkhurst, and terrible marking for a defender.

I sincerely hope he isn't back next season.

Just a little update here to catch up since the playoffs... Columbus:

- Traded Bernardo Anor to SKC for allocation money.
- Traded Josh Williams to NYCFC for allocation money.
- Had both Jairo Arrieta and Eric Gehrig selected by Orlando City in the Expansion Draft (Columbus received allocation money in return for both). Gehrig was then traded to Chicago. We were lucky not to lose Ben Speas, as Orlando City had a terrible draft.
- Signed attacking mid (and Icelandic sensation) Kristinn Steindorsson (stin-DOOR-shun). Could fill a void on the team we haven't had since Eddie Gaven retired (film).

No talk about the sweet new jerseys? Or start of the season?

Crew SC outplaying Houston but they make one great run and end it with the ball in the net. Dynamo goalie has 3 great saves and Higuain just nailed the crossbar. Frustrating. Would be nice to steal a point on the road.

Cruel game tonight. Punished on really 1 great play by Houston. And then, nothing to show on the board despite great chances for them.

I'm making the drive over to Columbus with some friends next week to brave the home-opener.

Throughout the match I kept wondering if Crew SC even debated getting rid of Dwight Burgess as play-by-play (and/or Neil Sika) and going with a clean sweep. But since it's on Time Warner Cable Sports, there probably isn't too much pressure to make changes.

Realizing Burgess has been play-by-play (at least radio) from the start, there were times I just wanted to hear the game breathe and didn't need someone describing every single play (like radio). But they're simulcasting on radio, so I guess they need to.

I somehow don't think media is high on Crew SC's priority list (compared to like a Seattle or NYCFC and media).

Should be a great matchup. It's been a long, difficult week. Otherwise, I would have made the trip as well. Looking forward to Meram's return, how they keep Steindorsson in the mix, and Kamara's progression with this team. I loved the opportunities he was able to create, as well as his passing through the midfield.

This game has the looks of a shootout. I'm still not very impressed with Toronto's defense, which bodes well for Pipa.

I don't really follow the Crew much, especially since I didn't subscribe to Time Warner until this year, but am a pretty big USMNT and USYMNT follower. With that in mind, can anybody give me an update on Romain Gall? I understand that he is injured, but can't find a timetable for his return. Also, I'm not sure of how much he played last season, but when he is fully fit this season, is he likely to start for the Crew?

IMO, Gall projects as that attacking spark off the bench. He will either come on for Higuain or Finlay.

I'm really impressed with what I've seen from Justin Meram and Kristinn Steindorsson playing at that Left Attacking Mid, and feel they will lock that position down as long as they stay healthy.

I can't tell you how nice it is to have a true forward presence up top to take some of the pressure off of Higuain and Meram so they can find some space in the attacking third. Kei Kamara isn't even completely in form yet, and he was able to put that beautiful volley into the back of the net last night.

As for the back line. This may be the most physical back line the Crew has ever fielded. Emmanuel Pogatetz is someone no one will want to fuck with in the middle, and we have Parkhurst there to neutralize some of the more speedy forwards in the MLS. Adding Hernan Grana at RB may be the best upgrade to a position the Crew made all off-season. He's locked that right side of the field down, and may be the best revenge tackler on th team. Waylon Francis has looked good at times, but he did get stray out of position for the game winning goal for Houston last week. It's still early though, and he was my favorite defensive player from last year, so I have no doubt he will lock that left side down by June. Also really liked what I saw from Saeid last night.

I believe when the summer transfer window rolls around, the Crew will be buyers for a striker and potentially another defensive player for depth. Would love to see them splash some of that stadium rights money on a striker like Miroslav Klose or an Argentenian forward like Rodrigo Palacio with his sweet ass Jedi hair-thing.
