Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

OK, WTF is the US Open Cup and does anybody care?

The Columbus Crew and Chicago Fire meet up in the fifth round of the U.S. Open Cup Wednesday night in Chicago. Both teams have enjoyed some time off of late, as Major League Soccer is finishing up its World Cup break.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the United States equivalent to what England has with the F.A. Cup. It features teams from the MLS, North American Soccer League (Division 2), and the USL Pro (Division 3). Generally, not many people care much about the earlier rounds, but there are some pretty huge upsets. Like last night, the LA Galaxy lost to the Carolina Railhawks (NASL) 1-0, Colorado Rapids lost to the Carolina Railhawks (2-1), and it's the one time of year you get to see the New York Cosmos take on the big boys (they lost last night to the Philadelphia Union, but knocked the New York Red Bulls out last week). Most of the MLS teams tend to give their star players a bit of a break, and give some of their more unproven players a chance to find some form.

The game tonight between the Chicago Fire and the Columbus Crew is an interesting one. They met in last years US Open Cup, and Chicago took one of Columbus' best center-backs out with a blown up knee. Adding that to the general hatred the two fanbases have for each other. Should be a good one.

This just leads me to ask...how can we get the Railhawks into MLS? We need a promotion system.

I'm with you on that. I'm very much in favor of a promotion system. I just don't know how big of a gap, financially, each league has.
Yeah I think that's probably the biggest hindrance...there would have to be an English FA kind of thing to regulate that sort of thing...plus there's the difficulty of teams having their own TV deals, which say for a Railhawks they would have to what, negotiate when they got up? I know there are a lot of barriers...but it would exponentially increase my interest if there were such a system.

If the Crew can find a way to dump off Tony Tchani, Jermaine Jones would be a fantastic fit in Columbus to play alongside Wil Trapp. First things first though, they desperately need a striker.

Here's a good article talking about where they might be looking for their next potential Designated Player.

Watching this Crew-Fire game, I keep wondering to myself... How in the hell is Steve Clark on the Columbus Crew, and not playing in Europe somewhere? He gets my vote for Team MVP so far this season.

The back line, on the other hand, has been complete shit tonight. I guess that's what happens when you throw out Ben Sweat, Tyson Wahl, Eric Gehrig, and Chad Barson back there...

I thought this was a strange quote from Berhalter:

“It wasn’t a pretty soccer game all around. Our job is to come out here and entertain the fans and play attractive soccer, and we didn’t do that. We didn’t live up to our end of the bargain.”

Really, just playing pretty ball and entertaining the fans, that's the job?

Heard he was sold for a cool $5 million. We could get a pretty darn good striker for the kind of allocation money that comes from a friend sale like this.
MLS gets a cut of that 5mil. Agreed though. If they spend the money right, it will be a good investment. Need a skilled striker, Mix Diskerud, and one more CB. I still have a good feeling Diskerud will be coming to the Crew once his contract is up in Norway.
