Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

Cruz Azul wins 2-0. Wasn't for lack of effort... or shots. FSC says 12 shots on goal?, 22 total shots. There seriously would have been another 5-6 more on goal if some of those had been a foot or two closer.

I hope we have some left in the tank for our game against LA this weekend

Crew won at home yesterday against a Beckham-less Los Angeles team in front of a season record 20k+ fans. Gaven had a goal off of a header with NO angle and Lenhart cleaned up a loose ball off of a shot by Emilio Renteria for the win. The Crew played with a line-up not unlike one we've seen recently by Warzycha... starting only 6 usual starters for the game (GK Hesmer, D Brunner & Hejduk, MF Carroll, Gaven, O'Rourke). Ekpo and Renteria, in particular, played very well starting in their place. Hejduk got a yellow card and will be forced to miss the next MLS game against Seattle next weekend (due to yellow card accumulation), which will be Sigi's first time returning to Crew Stadium since switching teams.

The Crew widened their lead over Chicago (who tied Toronto at 2's) in the East to 5 points with a game in hand over the Fire, and also own a 3-point advantage with a game in hand over the Houston Dynamo for the Supporters Shield.

The Crew plays Saprissa at home on Tuesday. Gonna be another huge game for the Black & Gold.

And in case you missed it, Freddie Montero with my vote (at this point) for MLS Goal of the Year with this blast against New England yesterday.

Excellent win yesterday for the Crew. Warzycha is doing a great job of using the entire roster, and everyone is pitching in. The Crew have now clinched their playoff spot, by the way.

I'd expect a pretty close to full-strength team for Tuesday's match vs. Saprissa. A win would clinch a spot in the knockout round, which would be great because then we wouldn't have to worry about the match in Puerto Rico that comes between matches @DCU and vs. NE.

Bad foul by Saprissa in the box gives the Crew the PK that Rodgers buries. Saprissa juuuuuust missed evening it off a set piece. Poked just wide.

1-0 Crew in the 36th. :banger:

Crew win 1-0 at New England to clinch the Eastern conference. Played the last 20-30 minutes down a man after Ekpo was given a rather weak red card. Padula scored the only goal off a free kick.

Now have a 5 point lead for the Supporter's Shield on the 3-way Western Conference tie of Houston, LA, and Chivas. Chivas has a game in hand on Columbus, LA, and Houston.

Well, it turns out the question was actually "if" and the answer was "no".

The conditions were horrible and it rained harder and harder as the match progressed. Despite pretty much controlling the match the whole way after the DC goal and getting tons of chances they just couldn't find the last good touch to put the ball in the goal. Seems like they were just unlucky or miscommunicating the whole night.

Renteria came on as a sub in the second half and ended up getting sent off late in the match when he made a stupid late tackle from behind out of bounds on a ball that had already gone out for a goal kick.

For as much as Saturday's loss sucked, it didn't hurt as bad as it could've for their chances at the Shield. None of the contenders in the West were able to earn the three points that would've really put the pressure on Columbus. In fact, everyone else was eliminated except Chivas USA.

Columbus has 49 points with one match left, Chivas USA has 44 points with two matches left. A win for Columbus in their final match clinches the Shield. So does a loss in either of Chivas' two remaining matches. A draw or a loss makes things interesting, but not impossible. Chivas' additional match takes place Thursday night in ESPN2

Before all that gets taken care of though, the Crew have their final group stage match for the CCL. The will be in Puerto Rico for that one - 8PM on FSC. They advance with a win or a draw tomorrow. They can also advance with a loss coupled with a loss or draw by Saprissa.

Looking back, the win at Saprissa was huge, as points in head-to-head matches is the first tiebreaker. The Crew's goal differential is not very good - worse than Saprissa's - and if it came down to that they'd be on the outside looking in if tomorrow brought a Columbus draw and a Saprissa win.
