Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

Game is getting very chippy, Azul is getting away with a TON of cheap shots right now. 1 to nothing in favor of Azul.

Make that 2 to nothing. Poor marksmanship from Columbus, they've been taken out of their game by the dirty play.

Marshall & Hejduk out and playing only 3 on the backline... Cruz Azul are picking us apart with runs in the final 3rd and making it look easy.

That should have been a red card to the Azul player, elbowing Lenhart in the head. Terrible no-call. Thought we were gonna see a boxing match there for a minute!

The Crew's not playing bad on offense though. Guille's wishing he had that direct kick he put off the woodwork back though. We've had 4 or so other shots that have come PAINFULLY close. Hats off to Azul's keeper though. He's come through with a couple amazing saves thus far to keep them in the lead.

Last time they played these guys it came with a hangover that led to a loss at NY. Maybe it was the travel, maybe it was getting thrashed 5-0 - but I hope it doesn't happen this time. The match against LA means too much to drop it.

I'm not able to watch this one tonight - I see they're already down though. Hope they can keep the margin where it is or even get a goal back. Goal differential could come into play and they're currently -2 to Saprissa's -1.

Since the Crew settled down in the 20th minute I don't think they've been the worse team at all, but being an MLS team they aren't finishing their chances. Playing with three in the back has us playing with a lot of offensive firepower, but it's leaving us very exposed in the back, particularly when Padula joins the attack. I think it might be a good formation to use against some of the less dangerous MLS teams who wouldn't be able to capitalize on those opportunities. Cruz Azul, on the other hand, is good enough to do so.

Renteria on for Lenhart.

That pass was absolutely gorgeous...gotta go to either post with the shot though.
Brilliant run by Ekpo too. Too bad he put it right at the keeper.

Stupid yellow card to Schelotto in the 71st for punting the ball straight up in the year and wasting time. I know he's frusterated, but c'mon now.

And the time wasting begins from Cruz Azul. :roll1:

Kevin Burns on for Gaven, looks like Warzycha's throwing in the towel.
Yeah. Don't like the Burns sub.

LOVE Renteria!! This is the first serious time he's had in a game for us. Plays like a Crew player. Hustles to the ball, plays hard, and comes back to play defense. Looks like another great pick-up! I can tell he'll be a crowd fav after he scores a couple.

Another shot off the post... this one from Adam Moffat.

I agree, Renteria is an absolute beast, I love his non-stop effort. He's very strong on the ball as well. I can't wait to see him more in MLS play.

4 minutes of stoppage time, and the near-misses continue to pile up. :(

The post has been Azul's best defender.

Well that was dissapointing...I kept getting on the edge of my seat thinking one was gonna sneak through and we were gonna have ourselves a ball game. But alas, it twasn't to be.
