Steve Mason isn't accustomed to sitting around this much.



OAKVILLE, Ontario -- The red, white and blue goaltender pads stand side by side in the family basement where Steve Mason trains.
In any other offseason, the leg guards would be as much a part of Mason's summer wardrobe as flip-flops and shorts.
The Blue Jackets' 20-year-old goaltending prospect likes to stay sharp by going to the rink several times a week and facing shots. But six days before Jackets prospects are scheduled to report, Mason has yet to stop a puck.

Blue Jackets: Filatov plans to land in Columbus today

Nearly three months after drafting him with the No. 6 overall selection in the draft, the Blue Jackets expect to welcome Nikita Filatov to Columbus today.
Filatov flew from Moscow to Toronto yesterday, arriving in the early evening and chatting with Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock by phone. He'll fly into town this afternoon and be greeted by player development coach Tyler Wright at Port Columbus.

Top draft pick takes dead aim at making roster

Nikita Filatov won't take long getting settled in his new world.
The Blue Jackets' top draft pick this summer, No. 6 overall, flew from Moscow to Toronto on Monday and then to Columbus yesterday. After he landed around 3:30 p.m., Filatov dropped his bags at a Downtown hotel and took a tour of Nationwide Arena.
"I'm so excited," Filatov said. "Beautiful building, great (dressing room). You can't imagine. It's so different (from Russia)."

Blue Jackets defenseman Ole-Kristian Tollefsen probably shouldn't have played hockey last season when bone spurs, a blocked nerve and a herniated disc took away most of the feeling in his left arm, and he sure shouldn't have gotten involved in some of the fights he did.
But Tollefsen wasn't about to turn down a rival who wanted to go; that wouldn't have been good for his reputation. His favorite movie is Gladiator, after all.

another tidbit from that same rumblings.
After all the hand-wringing over the Blue Jackets' lack of top-quality defensemen in recent years, there's a good chance that the team might trade a defenseman or two before the season.
Five defensemen -- Mike Commodore, Jan Hejda, Rostislav Klesla, Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman -- have lineup spots all but nailed down. That leaves Tollefsen, Kris Russell, Marc Methot, Aaron Rome and Clay Wilson to compete for the other spot. Of that group, only Russell and Wilson would not have to clear waivers if the Jackets try to send them to the minors.

Jackets hold top pick out of prospects tournament

Nikita Filatov's debut in a Blue Jackets uniform will have to wait.
The No. 6 overall pick in the 2008 NHL draft stayed in Columbus because of a leg injury yesterday while the rest of the club's prospects bused to Traverse City, Mich., for a tournament.
"We're not disclosing the exact injury," Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson said. "It's in the lower leg, and he needs time to heal. He injured it a few weeks ago, at some point while he was skating, not during off-ice workouts."

Stars' power-play goals doom Jackets

The Blue Jackets surrendered five power-play goals, including one with 1:10 remaining, as they fell to the Dallas Stars 5-4 at the prospects' tournament yesterday in Traverse City, Mich.
The Jackets had leads of 3-1 and 4-2 but couldn't overcome a parade to the penalty box. The Stars were 5 of 14 on power plays and the Jackets converted just 1 of 8 tries.
Dallas scored the final three goals in the last 12:35 of regulation. Jackets goalie Sebastien Dahm faced 32 shots.
