Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

It works in the NFL because they only play once a week.

It works in MLB because they play 3/4 games in a city.

The NBA does it like the NHL. I can't see them ever changing it to that extreme.

The unique thing about the NHL is their back to back , home and home. I love those. The CBJ could play Pitt, Buff, Toronto, Philly any time back to back. I love those games. What I don't like is what you mentioned before about playing back to back games with an overnite flight of 1000 or so miles.

I ignore any of Ecks trade rumors, but something like this expansion rumor seemed like something that has legs. We all know that Balsille wants a team and that Winnipeg should get a team. Suprisingly, the city they mentioned with Balsille was Kitchener. Still very close to Toronto, but Ontario is loaded with hockey fans that can never get Leafs tickets, so, sellouts should be no problem.

kitchner already has the rangers :wink2:

one of the reasons hamilton alwas comes up is they have an arena in copps that is only 20 years old, 18k seats.
look around ontario alone and the rinks you have (off the top of my head)

hamilton-copps 18k
ottawa civic-for the 67s 11k
toronto-ricoh 10k
london-labatt 9k
kitchener-dom cardillo 6k
mississuaga-6k
sudbury-sudbury 6k
kingston 6k
guelph 5k
brampton 5k
sarnia 5k
st marie 5k
peterborough 5k
waterloo 5k
oshawa 5k
toronto-varsity 5k?

then you get into the old 4-5k dumps...

winnipeg has the mts 15k
saskatoon 12k
halifax 11k

im sure i missed some

cap hit is one thing, um can they afford him. i dont know

he cleared. hell be put on re entry (half price). i think he should be claimed then. (i think)

Maybe....sometimes those guys just don't get picked up really quickly until someone has a major injury....

I'm just glad he isn't coming back to the Wings. while his skill set was nice, Lids needed a left-handed shot to compliment him....

Players appear eager for start of training camp

By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Thirty-six players took part in a pickup game yesterday in Nationwide Arena, a sure sign that Blue Jackets training camp looms.
"We're all ready to go," Blue Jackets goaltender Pascal Leclaire said. "When you don't make the playoffs, it's a long summer. By September you have the itch and you want to get on the ice. That's where we're at."
The Blue Jackets and the Blue Jackets hopefuls will have one more day of shinny in Nationwide today, before the organized club events take over.

Blue Jackets notebook: Prospects' seventh-place finish includes bright spots

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Blue Jackets beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-5 in overtime yesterday to finish seventh in the annual prospects tournament in Traverse City, Mich.
The Jackets had one of the youngest clubs in the eight-team tournament, but this was not a desired result, not after finishing second last year and winning it the previous two seasons.

5 questions for the Blue Jackets

Friday, September 19, 2008 3:15 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

When the Blue Jackets take the ice Saturday morning in the Dispatch Ice Haus, they'll have 62 players competing for 22 or 23 roster spots, and less than three weeks to go before the opener Oct. 10 in Dallas.
Technically, the club's eighth training camp opened yesterday with physicals and fitness testing, but the plot lines begin to unfold today.
The Dispatch looks at the five biggest questions coach Ken Hitchcock and his charges need to answer before the puck drops for real.
Who's in charge of the welcome wagon?

With six new players acquired over the offseason via free agency or trades, and two rookies likely to make the team, the Blue Jackets no doubt exchanged lots of handshakes over the past few days as players arrived in advance of training camp. How will the new guys fit in the lineup? You can bet Hitchcock has a good idea. How will they fit in the dressing room? That remains to be seen. The new players all have reputations for fitting in and helping to foster a healthy environment, especially the "robed" one, defenseman Mike Commodore. The coaches have a team-building retreat planned for early October at Miami University. The goal is to make the whole of the team greater than the collection of individuals. If that is to happen, the foundation must be laid in training camp.

Notebook: Peca to miss a few days with bronchitis

Saturday, September 20, 2008 3:21 AM
By Tom Reed

The Columbus Dispatch

Blue Jackets center Michael Peca didn't make it through the first week of training camp a season ago without requiring time off.
He won't have to worry about getting hurt today as camp opens. That's because Peca didn't make it out of team physicals unscathed.
Peca, 34, will miss the first few days of practice because of bronchitis. The illness was detected yesterday morning by the Jackets' medical staff.
"They just didn't want it to escalate into something like pneumonia," Peca said. "It's been going through our house and I'm the last to get it."

NHL
New guys will create big racket for Jackets

Saturday, September 20, 2008 3:22 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Defenseman Mike Commodore isn't likely to break out his signature dressing room robe until a few months into the season, when he's no longer one of the Blue Jackets' new guys.
"I'll have to go shopping around Columbus during the second half of the season," he said.
But Commodore won't take long to get comfortable. That's just his way.
That chin-up, chest-out approach to life -- "presence," general manager Scott Howson calls it -- is left winger Raffi Torres' way, too. And center R.J. Umberger's.
If you've noticed a theme at work among Blue Jackets newcomers, you're on to something. Beginning today, when training camp opens in the Dispatch Ice Haus, the Blue Jackets' dressing room will be a little louder, a little more full of life.

Jackets notebook: Norrena to have backup plan for season

Monday, September 22, 2008 3:03 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Before the Blue Jackets open the regular season, coach Ken Hitchcock plans to give backup goaltender Fredrik Norrena a tentative work schedule for the entire season.
The hope is that a better-prepared Norrena will be a better-performing Norrena.
"We want to keep him in more of a consistent groove this season," Hitchcock said. "We don't want him to go 3 weeks without starting a game.
