Blue Jackets: Goaltender prospect out with injury

By Tom Reed

The Columbus Dispatch

Goaltender Steve Mason worked diligently for five months, rehabilitating an injured left knee in hopes of winning a roster spot at Blue Jackets training camp.
His return to the ice lasted less than a week.
Mason, the franchise's top goaltending prospect, reinjured the knee Sunday during a drill and yesterday underwent arthroscopic surgery in Columbus to have damaged cartilage removed. Mason, 20, is expected to be out four to six weeks, general manager Scott Howson said.

The Blackhawks' Aaron Johnson, center, collides with the Blue Jackets' Jiri Novotny in front of goalie Corey Crawford.

CHICAGO -- The Blue Jackets used their exhibition opener last night to evaluate their two hotshot rookies -- center Derick Brassard and right winger Jake Voracek -- and a slew of young defensemen who are fighting just to make the roster.
How did they fare in a 4-3 loss to Chicago in the United Center?
Let's start with Brassard and Voracek. They're pretty much on the club, but if they keep playing like this, it'll calm a lot of nerves on Nationwide Blvd.
"Brassard has had a really good camp and I thought he was really good again tonight," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "Voracek has been getting better every day. He's going hard to the net and he's using his weight. It's good to see."

Wild hold off Blue Jackets 2-1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP)?With key sources of offense either hurting or playing elsewhere, the Minnesota Wild won with defense in their preseason opener, beating the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1.
Niklas Backstrom made 22 saves, Kim Johnsson and Benoit Pouliot scored goals and Owen Nolan had an assist in his Minnesota debut on Wednesday night.
Johnsson scored in the opening period, and Pouliot doubled the Minnesota lead in the third. Nolan assisted on Pouliot?s goal.
?We?re just trying to get to know each other out there,? said Johnsson, who had four goals last season. ?There are a lot of new guys that have to learn the new system, so it?s going to take a while.?
The Wild expect to be a more defensive-oriented club this season, with Pavol Demitra and Brian Rolston gone. They were also without Marian Gaborik on Wednesday, as he watched from the press box with a leg injury.
Jiri Novotny scored on a power play for Columbus in the third period, and Fredrik Norrena had 28 saves. The Blue Jackets are 0-2 in the preseason after opening with a 4-3 loss in Chicago on Tuesday.

?I thought we had bus legs, our travel legs,? said Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock. ?They really competed, and then in the second and third we really came on.?
Columbus missed an opportunity to tie it early in a penalty-filled second period. Minnesota?s Danny Irmen received a major penalty for boarding, but the Blue Jackets failed to get a shot on goal during the 5-minute power play.
?The only thing we didn?t touch on in training camp was the penalty kill,? said Wild coach Jacques Lemaire. ?Guess what we?ll be working on (Thursday).?

The Wild's Andrew Brunette, left, tries to get the puck past the Blue Jackets' Fredrik Norrena, center, and Aaron Rome.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Long before the puck dropped last night, the Blue Jackets knew they were facing quite a challenge.
That they lost only 2-1 to the Minnesota Wild could go down in some circles as a moral victory.
"I thought we had bus legs early, travel legs, whatever you want to call it," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "But we really came on in the second and third period. We know what we had in the lineup. We're evaluating, and we got a very good effort from just about everybody."
The Wild played its exhibition home opener with 14 regulars in the lineup, a little thank you to the fans who have supported them with nothing but sellout crowds since 2000. There were 18,064 on hand again.

Jackets notebook: Work the puck, defensemen told

Thursday, September 25, 2008 3:21 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Even at the risk of short-term suffering during the exhibition season, the Blue Jackets coaching staff is urging its stay-at-home defensemen to try leaving the front porch more often.
Rather than treat the puck like a hand grenade -- H ere, you take it! -- Blue Jackets defensemen are being asked to hang onto it longer and to make plays.

Blue Jackets: Huselius hired for offensive exploits

Friday, September 26, 2008 4:43 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

When Rick Nash compared the skills of his new linemate, Kristian Huselius, with former Blue Jackets teammate Andrew Cassels, he intended it as a high compliment. Cassels, after all, played center during Nash's rookie season of 2002-03 and part of the following season, when the left winger scored 41 goals and earned a share of the Maurice Richard Trophy.
Yesterday, after Nash and Huselius spent their sixth day of practice together, Nash dropped another name as he chatted about Huselius.

Jackets notebook: Veterans to fill lineup

Friday, September 26, 2008 4:44 AM
By Tom Reed

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Blue Jackets' jerseys that fans see hanging up in the Nationwide Arena gift shop will be the ones they watch on the ice in the exhibition season.
Coach Ken Hitchcock plans to play his veterans and most promising newcomers in all four home exhibition games, starting tonight against the Nashville Predators.
"We'll play a good lineup in all four of those games and we'll play to win," Hitchcock said. "You won't see fourth liners on the power play."

Me too! Looking forward to seeing the new guys, especially Huselius on the first line. Wouldn't mind Mirasty dropping his gloves as we'll need some physical presence out there w/o Boll.
