Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

The indifference the city is starting to show to this entire franchise has to be worrisome.

Agreed, but really they give you absolutely NO reason to watch on tv let alone spend a small fortune to go to a game downtown.

It's the same thing night in and night out. It's been this way since December. Yeah they had a little run there in February, but they couldn't get it done in the W column. 1 point games and shoot out losses are the story of this team. They stink.

This city will get behind a team that shows heart and consistency. The Jackets are absolutely gutless and quite frankly they don't deserve to have the fans behind them right now.

This season was the "same old song":

1. Has flashes of brillance that gets your hopes up that they make the playoffs.

2. Shows inability to win a close game and/or hang on to lead late in the game.

3. Overall inconsistant play and ends being eliminated from playoffs.

4. Ends season as a disappointment.

5. Final won/loss record just good enough to not get a high draft pick.

6. No real reason (i.e. addition of better players) to expect a different outcome for next season.

Not sure that I agree with this ARTICLE by Michael Arace in the Dispatch.

Talks about how the team is headed in the right direction.

Re: The Jackets are nearly $7million under the salary cap. The cap is going up. And they're going to have a ton of space once they sort through their four restricted and eight unrestricted free agents.

Yeah, they will have a "ton of cap space"; however, do they have and/or are they willing to spend the actual money?

Take from a fan of another team here - I think this team is finally being built with a plan in mind.

The Blue Jackets have one tier 2 guy (Nash), no tier 1 guys and virtually no tier 3 type guys although Umberger seems to have taken the leap into that category. Everyone else on the roster (not counting the guys they traded for) are tier 4 and below and a lot of them are underachievers.

I think if they retain most of the guys they traded for (I only think one of them is unrestricted) and actually improve the roster you'll see a more consistent season next year. The CBJ need a goalie. Not a journeyman (Garon), not a headcase (Mason) and not a project (LeClaire). Get a goalie and they are likely still in the race if not in the playoffs right now.

I don't want to make excuses, but the bottom half of the west is ridiculously stacked this year too. I've never seen the 5th through 12th spots in play like they were for nearly 2 months this year and it being game to game.

I'd almost put Nash in the top tier of players. I'm not sure there's a better winger in the league not named Ovechkin. Would really like to see Brassard take the next step and become the #1 center the Jackets need and Nash has never had outside All-Star games and Olympics, which he always dominates.

I like the way the Jackets are building. But they need to hurry the fuck up. I'm losing interest, and I always thought I'd watch the Jackets no matter how bad they were. I actually think they have a solid group of forwards. They could use another consistent goal-scorer, but their defense and goaltending is the big problem. They have too many d-men who would be good bottom-pairing guys.. Nobody even close to a top-pairing d-man. They desperately need a #1 d-man/PPQB. I wouldn't be mad if they overpaid to get Christian Ehrhoff and another solid d-man.

If only they would've traded for Goligoski and made a push for Ehrhoff.. they'd be in really good shape moving forward.

I agree with Bmike - I actually can see this team building towards something rather than just collecting players. I actually think that has made this season more frustrating for me. That is to say, I expect them to be better than they've been.

Also agree a goalie and Dman are vital....

Where do you get a goalie?

What do you do with Mason? He's not going to generate anything as far as a trade goes. He's a mess. Howson really screwed the pooch by locking up Mason after what appears to be a flash in the pan year.

EDIT
I take that back..Ilya Bryzgalov is an UFA after this season. Time to see if Howson will be "patient" or try and make a run at him this off season.

If you can get a bag of used pucks for Mason at this point you get him and get his salary off of the books.

Bryz is available - and something tells me there will be another top goalie either cut or available via trade.

A good goalie is like a good running back - they might not put you over the top but they can give you a consistent back end to build upon.

I've said it for two months now: just SOLID goaltending has this team in the playoffs.
