Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Power play has been better lately, but no where near what it needs to be.

Huselius had several chances that he needs to bury.

Edmonton is going to come out firing tomorrow. 1 point separates 6th and 10th place in the West.

C-bus still sitting at 6 and Edmonton sitting at 9.

game wasnt as bad as the score iindicated. that being said whats the major key to the game... need to bury the chances. need to have your best players be your best players. rick was average. 21 games left average wont cut it... a slew of teams breathing down columbus' neck. need 3 pts in the next two games.

Big night for the Jackets. They play at EDM, DAL hosts STL, and ANA travels to BOS. Stars should beat the Blues, but the Bruins should whup up on the Ducks. If CBJ can pull off the road win, they would pull away from those teams who are vying for the last two spots in the west, and move into a tie with VAN for 5th (though VAN would have two games in hand). One thing's sure, the Jackets can't keep giving up goals like they have in the last two games and expect to stay in the playoff hunt. There aren't many teams in the NHL that can count on scoring 4+ goals every night, and the Jackets aren't one of them. We need better play from the D-men clearing traffic in front of Mason.

I'm afraid that Mason is hitting that rookie "wall."

disagree. his "weakness" has been exposed. (high glove) watch how many shots go in that 1/4 of the net. or even 1/9th.

If that's the case then the D really needs to step up and take some of the pressure off of him.

Also need to bury the scoring chances that have been there.

and score more points than the other team...
bold.

Didn't catch the CGY game, but the most of the goals I saw from the ANA loss were scored by guys hacking away at loose pucks just outside the crease. I don't think they were even due to bad rebounds on Mason's part. If defensemen aren't clearing bodies from the front of the net, there's not much you can ask of a goalie. D-men need to just take their man and knock them on thier ass, or at least tie up thier sticks.

There is no doubt about high glove being exposed. My frustration is they are falling back on all the old issues that plague them. Lack of converting opps on offense and losing focus in the defensive zone. In the past 2 weeks they have won a couple games they should not have (which good teams should do) but they have also lost more than a couple games that they totally dominated for long stretches. that concerns me from a mental standpoint.

true. but 6-3-1 L10. though L2 streak. i think a tad of uncertainty is floating around with the deadline looming. hockey has ramped up, it will continue to ramp up, you either answer the bell or you go fishing in april...

I'd not heard that, but it's not surprising. Still, there are "Red Wings style" garbage goals, where a team has a dominant power forward who sticks his butt in the goalie's face for half the game (ie, a big part of the team strategy), and run-of-the-mill garbage, caused by bad bounces or bad defense (losing track of assignments, playing the puck instead of the man, etc.).

And a big part of that playoff intensity is taking care of business defensively in the slot. I think Mason is good enough to keep us in games when he can see the puck clearly, and doesn't have to deal with scrums at his feet. Sometimes defenders just need to lay the wood and risk taking a penalty to establish dominance in front of the crease. Not that creating shorthanded situations is ever good, but that aspect of hockey is a lot like line play in football, once you give up momentum, it's hard to get it back.
