The Canadian road trip will pretty much be make or break. There's some games in there (Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto) that if they aren't must-win, are very close to it. Strong performances against Ottawa and Montreal would be nice to see also.

I was at the Kings loss, which was IMO a bigger deal than the Chicago game. Yes, the Jackets got to OT, but for cryin' out loud -- the Kings are the worst team in the league. To lose on a shootout, no less...

Then they follow up a week later by dominating the team with the best record in the league, on the road even. All we can hope is that the game in Detroit will be a springboard to give this team the fire and confidence they need to finish out strong. At this point, the franchise NEEDS to make the playoffs. "Best season in club history" is all well and good, but making the playoffs will be a major stride forward.

Jackets notebook: Jackets have improved their power-play stats

Goalie Pascal Leclaire celebrates with Michael Peca after two power-play goals spurred the Blue Jackets to a 5-1 win over the Red Wings.

Gradually, and with little fanfare, the Blue Jackets' power play has grown from one of the NHL's most anemic to one of its most lethal.
"We're a threat," Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock said.
Two months ago, those words would have been laughable.
The Blue Jackets were 27th in the league on the man advantage at Christmas, converting at 14.1 percent (24 of 170).

awesome effort last night :roll1:

Seriously, St. Louis was coming off an OT loss to Trashville and it looked like the Jackets were the team that had played the night before.....that was horrible, especially the 2nd period on.....

The Blue Jackets' Derick Brassard (16) hits the wall after a hard check by St. Louis' Lee Stempniak in the second period of the Blues' 5-1 win.

ST. LOUIS -- Like most coaches, Ken Hitchcock loathes distractions to his team, especially as his Blue Jackets are making their first run at a playoff spot.
In Hitch-speak, distractions "really get my back up."
On Saturday in Montreal, however, Hitchcock will be only too happy to have his team a bit out of its game-night routine. That's the night the Montreal Canadiens retire Bob Gainey's No. 23 and raise it to the rafters in the Bell Centre.

This team just has me stumped. I can't figure it out. I wrote them off for the Detroit game and what do they do?

I then get excited and look at the standings and see Chicago beat Colorado so a win yesterday puts them tied for that 8th spot and what do they do?

They are just going to hover around that number 8 spot for the rest of the season and then piss it away at the end.

That is my prediction.

Though fans wearing paper bags on their heads are not common sights in Nationwide Arena these days, the Blue Jackets' average attendance (14,466) has dropped 1,935 from last season.

With the NHL trade deadline a week away, the decision whether to buy or sell rests not only in the mind of Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson, but in the mail of season ticket-holders.
The 2008-09 ticket renewal packages arrived at homes and businesses the past few days. It will be interesting to see if they are immediately returned with a renewal check, are held for a few weeks to see whether the Jackets strengthen the roster through trades -- either to add talent now in hopes of making the playoffs or to slash payroll so they can afford to bring in better players in the offseason -- or are burned in protest.

Jackets fired up for swing through eastern Canada

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

TORONTO -- This will either be the greatest week of the Blue Jackets' season, or the week when it unofficially ends.
Fittingly, the drama will play out on three of hockey's biggest stages.
Beginning tonight, the Blue Jackets will play in the hockey-mad cities of Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal during a five-day stretch that will carry them into next Tuesday's trade deadline -- and determine whether general manager Scott Howson is a buyer or a seller.

Jackets notebook: Boll's return could provide needed spark

Tuesday, February 19, 2008 3:07 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

TORONTO -- Blue Jackets right winger Jared Boll had a hard time catching his breath yesterday as he came off the practice ice, showing the last remnants of a nasty bout with bronchitis.
"I don't really care," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "If he can lace them up, he's playing."
Hitchcock wasn't kidding.
The Blue Jackets are desperate for wins, and to get wins they need to play, in Hitchcock's words, "a more consistently competitive brand of hockey."

The Blue Jackets' Nikolai Zherdev, left, collects the puck as the Maple Leafs' Hal Gill closes in during the third period.

TORONTO -- With each passing day and each listless loss, the Blue Jackets' chances of making the Stanley Cup playoffs become increasingly dim.
In fact, the Blue Jackets might look back on last night's loss in the Air Canada Centre as the night the lights went out on the 2007-08 season.
Playing on hockey's biggest stage, and facing one of the NHL's worst clubs -- both in record and in goals allowed -- the Blue Jackets couldn't muster enough energy or goals to win, falling 3-1 to the Toronto Maple Leafs before 19,347.

TORONTO -- Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson spent his second day at the GM meetings in sunny Naples, Fla.
Meanwhile, in snowy Toronto, where the Blue Jackets played the Maple Leafs last night in the Air Canada Centre, coach Ken Hitchcock made a plea for Howson to avoid a fire sale heading into the trade deadline next Tuesday.

Jackets given challenge
Looking for leaders, Hitchcock walks out, tells players to run practice
Thursday, February 21, 2008 3:31 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

OTTAWA -- Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock has waited all season for the players to, in his words, "drive the bus."
Yesterday, unwilling to wait any longer, Hitchcock followed a closed-door meeting by putting down the keys, so to speak, and walking out the door.
Hitchcock and the rest of the coaching staff left the players to practice by themselves at a rink on the campus of the University of Ottawa.
