Colorado Buffaloes (official thread)

An elevation from RB coach D-1A to Head Coach D-1A would be a big leap. Then again Embree is just an assistant rather than say an OC in D-1A or at HC / OC at another program in a lesser conference. Seems the Buffs are out there buck-naked now and willing to rush into a decision. Where CU painted themselves into a box was by stating that they would have a new HC in position by their bowl game - which is December 27th. That doesn't allow for an orderly transition, it also takes out of effective consideration many candidates currently in an active post.

<!-- /article right block --> <!-- byline --> <!-- /byline --> BOULDER - The University of Colorado's search for a new football coach won't focus on one of the bigger names rumored to be on the Buffaloes' wish list. Butch Davis, a former University of Miami and Cleveland Browns coach, is not a candidate, a source close to the school said Monday night.
Davis told the Rocky Mountain News on Sunday night while he had not been contacted by a CU official or anyone representing CU, he would "listen a little bit" if the call came.
Two candidates are known to have interviewed in the search to replace Gary Barnett, who was fired Thursday after seven seasons at the school.
Former Buffaloes player and assistant Jon Embree, now UCLA's assistant head coach, was interviewed off campus Sunday night.
"I appreciated the opportunity and hope things work out," said Embree, who coaches the Bruins tight ends.
Boise State coach Dan Hawkins interviewed Saturday and told The Idaho Statesman on Monday, "I don't even know if there's (something) to be interested in. I don't know where it goes from here."
If its search settles on Hawkins, CU would have to deal with an $850,000 buyout clause in his Boise State contract. CU's settlement with Barnett was $3 million, a sum that primarily will be funded by a 12th game next season and additional revenue generated during the next two years.
Hawkins' team finished 9-3 this season and will play Boston College in the MPC Computers Bowl in Boise on Dec. 28, one day after CU meets Clemson in the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, Fla.
Hawkins' five-year record at Boise State is 53-9, which includes three undefeated championship seasons (2002, 2003, 2004) in the Western Athletic Conference.
Other names on speculative lists of candidates have included Miami defensive coordinator Randy Shannon; Southern California offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin; and former Buffaloes receiver Dave Logan, a successful Mullen High School coach and Denver radio personality.
Denver Broncos assistant Tim Brewster is not believed to be a candidate.
CU athletic director Mike Bohn said "the process is continuing" but declined to say whether any more candidates will be interviewed. Bohn said last week he hoped to have a new coach in place before the bowl game, if not sooner.
BOHN, ASSISTANTS MEET: CU's assistant coaches, who work for month-to-month paychecks, had hoped a meeting with Bohn might yield an extra three months pay, through March.
It apparently didn't happen, but Bohn said the school "will certainly do everything we can to help them."
He said he would like his new hire "to interview each one of the coaches and for them to anticipate an opportunity to be retained."
If that does not happen, Bohn said CU would "do everything within our purview to support them."
Asked about the mood of the remaining assistants, offensive line coach Dave Borbely said, "You control what you can control. . . . We're all professionals; we're going to bust our butt to get ready to play (the bowl game)."

I was actually thinking that--if the sports talk ramblings were true-- that CU didn't fire Barnett last year, because they couldn't afford the buyout... then Butch Davis is out of the question moneywise... he'll want a Urban Meyer sized contract. (not saying he'll get it... but that's what he'll ask for)

How about Franchione...he'll move at the drop of a hat.
Don't be daft - -they can't afford him. LINK

A&M just re-did Franchione's contract at the beginning of the year. After this year its even more valuable than the current 2.16 Million (Washington's that is ).
It is a contract with automatic bumps of at least 100K per annum and bowl appearance bonuses nearing 400K.

Perhaps the Buffs can get the wonderful RC Slocum instead :tongue2:

EDIT for initial error

Is that RC Slocum's brother? :tongue2:

Just kidding with Franchione, 4 years with A&M and their worse than when he took over.

He really does make Slocum look good or John Cooper for that matter.

The choice that makes sense to me is Dave Logan, ala Browns fame. He is well liked and well known. Broncos announcer, many commercials and took 3 different high schools to State Championships as a football coach. All that and has a radio show here as well.

The last time his name was brought up was when Tricky Ricky got the job and they told Logan that he has no experience. What irony!

Seriously, if they dont bring in Dan Hawkins and his O co-or, with a great D co-or, then they are clueless. That is the perfect fit. Look at what he did with Boise. The fans there are crazy about that program now. Maybe Hawkins does not want the job?

Looks like I was wrong about Hawkins leaving Boise. Apparently Hawkins is going to Colorado.

Hawkins interviewed last weekend with Athletic Director Mike Bohn. CU hopes to introduce Hawkins as the new coach by the end of the weekend.
Hawkins did not go on a scheduled recruiting trip Tuesday and when asked to comment about the potential of coming to Boulder, he replied to an Idaho paper "the process is not complete". Ironically, Bohn gave the exact same quote to the Rocky Mountain News on Tuesday night.
Hawkins has been with the Broncos for five years and just finished the first year of a 5 year contract extension. It's an extension worth $2.6 million, hence the reason his buyout (should he get hired) is $700,000. His name has come up in conjunction with many head coaching vacancies over the past couple years: Notre Dame, Stanford, and Kansas State to name a few.
Hawkins has complied a 53-10 record with the Broncos along with four straight WAC Championships. During his first year at Boise State, Hawkins switched a senior wide receiver to tight end - that senior was drafted the next year by the Denver Broncos: Jeb Putzier.
Boise State is scheduled to play Boston College in the MPC Computers Bowl on December 28th. The Buffs play Clemson in the Champ Sports Bowl the day before - Hawkins may very well be attending a bowl game a day earlier than he expected when his team finished their 9-3 season.
