<!-- /article right block --> <!-- byline --> <!-- /byline --> BOULDER - The University of Colorado's search for a new football coach won't focus on one of the bigger names rumored to be on the Buffaloes' wish list. Butch Davis, a former University of Miami and Cleveland Browns coach, is not a candidate, a source close to the school said Monday night.
Davis told the
Rocky Mountain News on Sunday night while he had not been contacted by a CU official or anyone representing CU, he would "listen a little bit" if the call came.
Two candidates are known to have interviewed in the search to replace Gary Barnett, who was fired Thursday after seven seasons at the school.
Former Buffaloes player and assistant Jon Embree, now UCLA's assistant head coach, was interviewed off campus Sunday night.
"I appreciated the opportunity and hope things work out," said Embree, who coaches the Bruins tight ends.
Boise State coach Dan Hawkins interviewed Saturday and told
The Idaho Statesman on Monday, "I don't even know if there's (something) to be interested in. I don't know where it goes from here."
If its search settles on Hawkins, CU would have to deal with an $850,000 buyout clause in his Boise State contract. CU's settlement with Barnett was $3 million, a sum that primarily will be funded by a 12th game next season and additional revenue generated during the next two years.
Hawkins' team finished 9-3 this season and will play Boston College in the MPC Computers Bowl in Boise on Dec. 28, one day after CU meets Clemson in the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, Fla.
Hawkins' five-year record at Boise State is 53-9, which includes three undefeated championship seasons (2002, 2003, 2004) in the Western Athletic Conference.
Other names on speculative lists of candidates have included Miami defensive coordinator Randy Shannon; Southern California offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin; and former Buffaloes receiver Dave Logan, a successful Mullen High School coach and Denver radio personality.
Denver Broncos assistant Tim Brewster is not believed to be a candidate.
CU athletic director Mike Bohn said "the process is continuing" but declined to say whether any more candidates will be interviewed. Bohn said last week he hoped to have a new coach in place before the bowl game, if not sooner.
BOHN, ASSISTANTS MEET: CU's assistant coaches, who work for month-to-month paychecks, had hoped a meeting with Bohn might yield an extra three months pay, through March.
It apparently didn't happen, but Bohn said the school "will certainly do everything we can to help them."
He said he would like his new hire "to interview each one of the coaches and for them to anticipate an opportunity to be retained."
If that does not happen, Bohn said CU would "do everything within our purview to support them."
Asked about the mood of the remaining assistants, offensive line coach Dave Borbely said, "You control what you can control. . . . We're all professionals; we're going to bust our butt to get ready to play (the bowl game)."
