As much as everyone likes to point to the popularity of March Madness, I just wanted to add that I think it's total bullshit that about ten of the teams in the tournament every year are even there. You can't convince me that the 7th/8th team from the ACC/B10/Pac10 wouldn't smash the sixteen seeds every year. When tOSU won the N.I.T. two seasons ago, they should've been in the NCAA instead of those sorry ass 16th seeds imo. It's the one major complaint I have with the basketball tourney. I'd hate to see the sport I love far more than college basketball head down the same path.

This post has win and beard. +1

I'd like to hear how the remarkably mediocre 7th/8th place team is deserving of a title shot at all.

Maybe neither should be in, but those teams failed far too frequently during the season to be deserving of such pity.

I don't think they are. I'm just saying that they are more deserving, in my opinion, than either of the "basketball teams" that participate in the play-in game. You don't think that the tOSU team that won the N.I.T. would've stomped most, if not all of the 16/15 seeds in the NCAA that year?

How clever. Funny though, UM more than likely wouldn't have made any playoff that year. On the other hand, App St, if they were FBS, not FCS, they could have had a good chance depending on what league there were in and who they played.

First, thanks, because you're the first playoff proponent in recent memory to actually post a [censored]ing plan rather than anecdotes and mindless "mantra"

But, you're about 3 weeks to a month late  See:

I think the first round in this proposal is [censored]. But I do agree that the 2nd round games and beyond, on paper, look pretty good. I'd have to run the scenario for more seasons than just last to have a better feel for the proposal and its advantages and disadvantages, of course, but as you see from folks like Kyle.... football fans aren't particularly thrilled with the prospects of a Sun Belt Champ Troy getting a shot at being National Champion.

The "true cinderella" argument.... Is he serious?

Wetzel seems to think people tuned in to the Boise OU game because they thought Boise had a chance.... to the contrary... people tuned in late in the 4th when it looked like Boise might pull it off... no one, before the game, said "Well, I'm gonna be all over the Fiesta Bowl Boise v. OU is HUUUUGEEE puset potential!" Thus his assumption that millions of viewers would watch East [censored]sandwich State v. Southern Cal is a bit misuided if you ask me.

Likewise, the "cinderella" angle is pretty over played. One of these days Cinderella's gonna win it... that's a great story, of course.. But, I'm not in the business of manufacturing stories. Interestingly enough, Wetzel is... do the math. Regardless, you're kidding yourself, I think, if you don't believe there would be much yelling and screaming if one day 7-5 Upper Nobody State does the unthinkable and becomes your champion... (again, this is not an argument about a playoff's legitimacy... the 7-5 Champion would still be legit.... I'm talking about the consequences of an argument advanced by Wetzel not being all sunshine and roses as he advances.)

or worse... 6-6 Notre Dame. :wink2:

Yeah, I remember now reading your playoff structure a month or so ago. I just remember recently seeing you call for someone to make a somewhat compelling argument for a playoff and decided to throw my hat in the ring. I always liked the idea of the Wetzel Plan because of its, probably overdone, fairness. No longer is there exclusion. Are there more ideal structures? Possibly. There are + and - for each plan. I just think the Wetzel Plan covers all bases and minimizes the negatives. I think the top 16 BCS ranked is okay, but still will exclude, and favor the BCS conferences.

Looks like the Wetzel takes the top 12 BCS ranked, or close to it, and then adds the 4 lower tiered conference champs.

I don't think anyone here can say with absolute certainty that you are correct. They might say it, but, no one will ever know. Looking at the Wetzel Plan, they surely would have made the playoff, if they were in the MAC, or other similar conference.

 Are you fucking serious? No one can say for sure that Appy St. would've made the playoff, but in the very next sentence you say, they surely would have. Ridiculous.

If ASU were in FBS, they would've played a real schedule. They surely wouldn't have made a playoff.

They won the FCS legitimate National Championship. No doubt they would have been able to win the MAC, or another like conference. Which, would put them in the playoff under the Wetzel structure.

I'm sure you'd like to believe that since they beat TSUN, but that doesn't make it true. Just because they won against a bunch of shit teams and TSUN, doesn't mean they would've walked thru the MAC or a similar conference. You aren't giving enough credit to the MAC.

there were no "hot" teams at the end of 2007.

My response was not about 'hot' teams. My response was to a post that said a team can't lose late in the year and make the BCS Title game. I simply provided historical evidence that showed that statement to be untrue. And I bolded that part of the post I quoted in order to indicate that's what I was referring to.

A proposal of a 'plus-4' after the BCS bowls is apparrently being discussed this week.

SI.com from the Denver Post.

Radical BCS plan in works

A recommendation to change the current Bowl Championship Series could come out of the Collegiate Commissioners Association meetings, which run Tuesday through Thursday at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. A radical proposal from Mountain West Conference commissioner Craig Thompson will be further examined Tuesday. If any aspects of the proposal are accepted, the commissioners will recommend them to the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee, which has a conference call June 24. Under his proposal, a conference would qualify for one of the BCS bowls only by meeting two criteria: playing at least 20 regular-season games in a two-year period against teams from the six major BCS conferences; and winning at least 40 percent of those games. A new 12-person committee, made up of one representative from each of the 11 conferences, plus Notre Dame, would determine the top 25 teams at the end of the regular season. The top 10 teams would play in the Rose, Fiesta, Orange and Sugar bowls, plus a to-be-determined fifth bowl currently hosting a non-BCS bowl. The winners of the top four bowls would play in semifinals one week later, with those two winners meeting in another week for the national title.

Cont'd ...

This is kinda like having a date with someone totally out of your league who keeps giving you glimpses of cleavage. You know damn well that she isn't going to let you in her pants, she just wants you to be interested in what's underneath them. People need to stop teasing us about a CFB playoff unless and until they're ****ing gonna give us one.
