From Wikipedia:

I suspect that in 10 years or so we may look back and say that this was indeed the Maginot Line of College Bowls. Much to my chagrin - although if we hold on long enough I may have gone on to that great gas chamber in the sky by then. (I just love a good metaphor.)

Now - let's get back to those Lacrosse Playoffs....

It's hard to get his exact meaning from the text. Gee is a very intelligent individual, so I would be shocked if he made such a gaff. Alternatively, if he's using the meaning you suggest, he's admitting that he's just being obstinate and holding back the inevitable. Is the latter really any better? I suppose you could claim some point of principle regarding the professionalization of college sports, but I'd just point to the NCAA basketball tournament. I'm not sure he has a leg to stand on here. While I personally wouldn't necessarily want a full fledged playoff, I find the sort of attitude you're suggesting to be like leaving a box of rusty hammers in your laundry machine (I, too, like a good metaphor).

Gee made another good point in talking about getting ready for the NFL.

I know that these kids love to play football. But when you talk about 8 or more teams that could qualify for a playoff you are talking about a ton of players who are ready to move on to the NFL once the season is done. A kid taking it easy so he can avoid injury has been documented even in our current one game championship set up.

So for these kids who, as much as we would like to think are playing for the old school colors, but in reality are all about the NFL, what is in it for them? Extra meal allowance? More books? A year of graduate tuition? Or just 2-3 more chances to get injured in advance of the combines?

They really have to stop with the professionalization of college lacrosse.

Wait, so football is the only college sport that isn't professionalized? Wow, I had it completely backwards.

Seeing that you're a USC fan, it's easy to understand why you would think of your players as professional athletes. :nerd:
