College Football Playoff (2016-2017 Season)

After watching the talking heads this morning, the biggest controversy right now seems to be Ohio State with a possibility to make it in over a (theoretically) Big Ten champ PSU. That PSU has the head-to-head and also a championship. I understand that argument but I also rival it with saying, look at the resumes and look at the W-L totals.

That said, for the Buckeyes best interest let's hope Wisconsin wins the Big Ten over PSU (should OSU not get into the B1G title game).

The talking heads are the same folks who wanted Baylor and TCU in 2014. They also ignore that Okie got in without a CCG victory. Actually the purpose of the talking heads is to create an audience and the best way to do that is have an on air food fight. Statistics and reason are not necessary. Conflicting arguments and personalities are.

Ohio State could conceivably have wins over 10-win Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Michigan. Two of those would be on the road in prime time.

Its simply really hard to see the scenario where the committee slights OSU. This is precisely the reason why we have a committee and a four team playoff. Except for...

It will help tremendously to see Oklahoma win out and win the Big XII. The irony... When it comes down to parsing resumes between three, four, and five, our playoff fate could lay in the hands of Big Game Bob.

Furk.

Just took this approach against Clemson.

They did not "beat" Auburn, TROY, Louisville, NC St, or Fla St. They have not "beaten" any ranked team.

Louisville has beaten everyone they have played except Virginia and maybe Duke (and of course Clemson).

Until last week Washington had beaten everyone except Utah and Arizona.
Ohio States case for inclusion cannot be questioned.

TTUN LOST and they dropped exactly ZERO spots. There's no excuse for that as they should've seen some sort of drop.
Not at all. You're speaking in poll mentality. They cleaned the slate and looked at the records. They did it the right way. Buckeyes played 4 ranked teams going 3-1, no one else has, so the get 2. Then they looked at Clemson and ttun, both are 3-0 agains ranked teams with a loss to an untanked team. They then probably used the eye test and see Clemson could have lost a few more and gave ttun the nod. The Louisville is only 1-2 against ranked teams and only 2 wins against teams with a winning record and put them 5th. That's my problem. I would have put them after Washington and Wisconsin and probably before penn state. The only thing Louisville has shown is they can run up the score on aweful teams. Everyone in the top 20 but Clemson has shown that. Louisville has just run up the score more often because they have played so much more garbage. They play in a conference with 2 good teams and on the other division literally played the two worst teams then scheduled a mediocre OOC.

Imagine this:

OSU and PSU both win out, with PSU getting the extra win for the B1G championship.

Final Rankings: 1.Bama 2.OSU 3.Clemson 4.PSU

PSU beats Bama, OSU beats Clemson.

All B1G NC game. OSU takes revenge in a blowout victory where PSU never sees a penalty flag thrown against their team and OSU gets everything called on them so no reffing to blame.

One can wish.

I like it.

No. Imagine this:

OSU and PSU both win out, PSU wins the B1G outright and has the head to head W over Ohio State.

Final Rankings: 1. Bama 2. Ohio State 3. Clemson 4. Washington

The committee doesn't even take Penn State.

That's my wish, even if the priapism kills me.

I like it.

Can someone make BOTH of these happen? If not, then I'm OK with either one.
Or... take buxfan's scenario and have Bama pound Penn State's ass right in the face for 45 minutes. Then, begin the 4th quarter with their defense playing offense and their offense playing defense, and score another 5 touchdowns on Penn State that way. Then have Ohio State beat Bama in the finals.

No one is going to pick an 11 - 1 ACC team over an 11 - 1 Ohio State unless the Cards manage to blow out Houston and Kentucky by 30 - 40 points each while the Bucks struggle to win their final two.
You're funny with that last commment. Buckeyes would be 4-1 against ranked teams and 3-1 against top 10. Cards may end up 0-1 against ranked teams after the noles lose to a soon to be unranked gators.

Yes, but...

Louisville gets a ton of support due to their QB and the Heisman race. In a year in which there are so few standout players that Gerbil gets slobbered on every week, that fact alone will garner support for the Cards.

College Football Playoff Metrics Have Ohio State Looking Good Even Without B1G Championship

16-10-29-FB-1180-FP.jpg

The latest College Football Playoff rankings were released Tuesday evening and, as expected, Ohio State found itself sitting at No. 2 behind Alabama.

While that's good news for the Buckeyes, there could be plenty more where that came from.

How so?

First, let's make a couple of assumptions. Let's assume that Alabama and Clemson win out and make the playoffs. The second assumption is that Ohio State wins out, which is obviously no guarantee, but a necessity for this entire scenario. The third assumption is that Penn State wins their final two conference matchups and goes to the Big Ten Championship Game.

Ohio State is looking for one of two available playoff spots, but they won't have the golden ticket of a conference championship to get them in automatically. (That golden ticket, by the way, is null and void with a second loss and/or a paltry schedule.)

The Buckeyes will be competing with Penn State, Wisconsin, Louisville, and Washington for one of those two final spots. We can scratch off Louisville taking OSU's spot because they're already behind the Buckeyes and have no real shot at a conference title.

That leaves Penn State, Wisconsin, and Washington.

Many people view the Nittany Lions as Ohio State's downfall after their 24-21 victory over the Buckeyes a few weeks back. How can the committee put Ohio State in the playoffs over a Penn State team that wins the Big Ten Championship Game?

Simple. By following their own metrics and protocols.

If teams aren't seen as being "close" to each other in the rankings, then the whole "head-to-head" doesn't even come into play. Right now Ohio State is No. 2 and Penn State is No. 8. Is that close? How much closer can Penn State get with wins over Rutgers, Michigan State, and Wisconsin when Ohio State would have wins over those same teams?

And even if Ohio State and Penn State end up "close" enough to bring in the head-to-head results, that is just one of four metrics that the committee uses to decide between two teams. The others? Strength of schedule, conference championships, and comparable outcomes against common opponents.
